Excellent! There's absolutely no reason you can't do this.
Get to a real running store, and have them fit you. Some of the more sophisticated shops have a tool that will image your feet and strike patterns. At the very least, they will watch you run.
The big key sometime hinges on stability control, pronation and supination. Without knowing exactly what you do, it's pretty useless to recommend a specific shoe.
However, I have excellent luck with New Balance shoes. They seem to offer widths, and a wide range of products with and without stability control. The Brooks Beast is a good shoe, if it fits you.
If you are running now, bring your old shoes with you. This can be very helpful. Do NOT go to a big retail chain. It's rare to find a tech who knows anything about running shoes.
The salesperson will probably recommend going up one-half to a full size. At high mileage your feet swell significantly. It's more of a concern for a marathon, so a half size should do it.
Good luck!

First of all, good for you! Have you been training for awhile or just starting? Remember, you need to train several weeks with 3-4 mile runs per day, at least 5 days per week. Work up to at least an 11 mile run, once per week about 2-3 weeks before the half. Then taper down to 2-4 miles the week before and up to the race (daily taking 2 days off per week). Rest the full day before the race. As far as shoes go, I wear the ASICS Gel Kayuno shoes. The Kinsei is an excellent shoe as well. That being said, each person has a different stride pattern so you should go to a running shoe store and have them do a foot strike pattern test. You may be a heel striker or a ball runner. Either way, have them fitted. Best of luck to you! Contact me for further run information, if you wish.

I would echo what several others have said and head to your local running store. The staff will look at your foot strike and recommend a shoe. If you know that you need a neutral shoe, I would recommend Adidas Adistar Cushioned. I have run in MANY shoes and this is, by far, the best shoe that I have found for big guys. If you need a stability shoe, try the Asics Gel Kayano or Brooks Epiphany or Mizuno Wave Creation. (I don't have a recommendation for motion control as I have never worn them.)

Eddy,
GOOD FOR YOU for doing a half! My max is 5 miles, and my mind starts to do weird things.
Go to a running store in your area. Not a Footlocker or Niketown, but a real running store.
Tell them what you are looking for and they will make some suggestions. Try one pair at a time, outside. See how your body feels over the next few days (back, knees, etc.). Get the ones that make you feel the best.
Ask the people you are training with. Runners come in all shapes and sizes, so find someone about your size and ask him what he recommends.
Shoes can make or break a runner.
Best of luck in the half! Maybe I'll get there one day!

You CAN'T pick a shoe based on what other people wear and like. The Brooks Adrenaline is the best selling shoe in America but it does't work for me. Anyhow, you have to go to a specialty running store and get fit. They are going to analyze your gate cycle (overpronator, neutral, supenator), you may think you know this on your own, but most people don't. Also, they take into account any other factors (injuries, weight). They'll be able to give you the right shoe for you. You should be able to exchange the shoe within a month if its causing you problems (at least you can at the specialty shops near me).
Good luck and congrats. I'm young and healthy and hold collegiate records for running, yet I'm just letting it all go to waste by sitting on my ***. I admire you.

I have run in the Beast and the Asics Gel Kayano series. I personally prefer the Kayanos, the the Beast is a good shoe.
Take a look at www.roadrunnersports.com. They have a pretty good shoe guide. And great running clothes.

I would definatley go with ANY shoes my Asics. I find that they are the absolute best shoe for any running. My brother was an all scholastic champion before he graduated high school. He wore asics all the time and it turned out great for him and all of his team-mates
