You can never afford a family on paper. It;s one of those things where you have to go for it - you'll manage

No. It's not expensive. You just have to be able to discriminate between needs and wants and you'll do fine. When we first had my daughter our household income was $22K and we were able to make ends meet. There is a lot of expensive stuff advertised but you don't need it. Yard sale clothes, breastfeeding, and cloth diapering are all great and if you do all that (provided you have decent health insurance) the child tax deduction from the government ($1000/year) is actually more than you have to spend on your child in that year. The problem is people have inflated expectations. A baby does not need a fancy stroller, its own room, or tons of fancy clothes. What it does need are a mom and dad who love each other and love the baby and are willing to spend time with the baby. Raising a baby now is not more expensive than it's been in the past- it's just that we as a generation expect more. We're a one income family and not only are we doing fine financially (with one child and one on the way), we're putting $1000/month (yes, that's not a typo) into the bank. You can do it if you're willing. Starting a family just has to be important enough to you. You might have to give up some luxuries (depending on how you've been living) but it's worth it. The biggest thing for us was me not having any income, but that was what we did because we want only the best for our kids in the areas that matter (like mom at home) and we're willing to do without in the areas that don't matter (fancy vacations, fancy toys, brand new clothes, etc.)

It is if you are one of those families that has to have every new toy on the market. (I am not talking kids toys only either, I am talking about grown up toys like new cars, fancy vacations, latest fashions) Unless mom is taking down over $75,000 it is not worth her to work. She is more valuable at home. Learn the difference between wants and needs. Everyone doesn't need a cell phone. Teach your children at a young age to not demand a candy bar at the check out, the latest fad, the value of saving for something they want. But remember the parents have to follow the rules too. No more manicures mom.

I am so sick of people telling me 'you'll never be able to afford kids but you always find a way' - we seriously can't afford it! We've been married 6 years and I'm definitely broody, my husband has been for ages but I'm the practical one. It's just ridiculous how much just one tiny little person costs! I'll admit that we haven't exactly been sensible with money over the past few years, debts, credit cards, a nice fat mortgage, but I just don't want to bring a child into a world where it's mum would be a paranoid wreck with being broke!

If you start out slow and work your way up and don't try to keep up with the Jones you can manage. Sure you will have to change your life style but with a family and kids you have to anyway. Start with one child and give them all you can. Raising my family, my wife stayed home and took care of our son and we lived on one salary, mine. There were times we had only enough money to buy a happy meal, after our son eat what he wanted, we divided and ate the rest. You will be amazed how little you can live on if there is love in your home. Go for it. There is nothing like kids. I have two sons and three grand kids.

I'd say if you really want Children, go for it, u will never be able to affort them!! Make it happen, u allways bought that little stuff when u couldn't really afford anything either, didn't u??

Besides, Children don't cost that much at first, you just have to be ready to Love!!! That's the most important thing for Kids, more then to have all those fancy things u never had when u were a kid!!

No.
I'm one half of a loving, responsible, hard-working couple -- and I have two kids. Don't have any problems affording them or providing them with everything they need.

Of course, the Bush administration isn't helping young families, with the real wage down since he got into office, home prices up, median wage down, interest rates up, loan money harder to get (since much of the world's credit it tied up in borrowing to pay our national debt)...
Want to make it easier for a young family to afford kids? Vote democratic! :)
