Did people get much further than the late 30's early 40's before dying ?.
Not a precise question on religion, I know, but its nice to have a few actual facts sometimes, rather than the fiction normally entered on this forum.

The Bible was not written all at once but over a period of around 2000 years. Right at the beginning humans lived for hundreds of years eg. Methuselah lived to be 969 - he was the oldest. Actually according to science the human brain is capable of living for 1000 years. Later the human life time was reduced to an average of 120 years and after the flood (another scientific fact) it was further reduced to 70 years although some can live to much longer than this.
The skulls they have found of very early man - Neanderthals - have thicker bones at the forehead and scientifically speaking, if a person was to live to be hundreds of years old this is exactly what would happen. The skulls of Neanderthal children and young people were exactly the same as our young people and children today.
It's worth a thought ...

That isn't always necessarily true! Whales average age is 90, tortoises-100, turtles-100 Animals like dogs, cats, monkeys are much smaller than us with smaller interior organs with many limitations. We humans have developed all sort of medical treatments and drugs used to keep us alive but the truth is, we normally do not live up to 100 years or so. Other animals like dogs, cats and monkeys don't have those treatments and drugs, even with the very advanced veterinary treatments, we still have not discovered the technology. These animals have a much smaller resistance to certain things such as diseases and climates. The truth is, we don't really know the real causes.

Well, let's see, the Israelites were supposed to be punished by not allowing any of the generation who worshiped the golden calf into the promised land. They wandered around for 40 years.
That'd put their average lifespan at about 40 years, wouldn't it?

If I remember, but don't quote me, Joshua lived into his 90s.

We also have the limit on life post-Flood being 120 years, later have the Psalms telling us that 70 years (threescore and 10) is very old.

Check out this article on ages of the patriarchs.
Human lifespan decreased at the time of the flood - interesting to see the graph on the link.

In the book of Genesis, the Bible routinely records human lifespans which seem outrageously different from our experience today. Adam lived to 930 years; Noah even longer, to 950 years (see graph below). These long lifespans are not haphazardly distributed; they are systematically greater before the Flood of Noah, and decline sharply afterwards.

There are spcific ages mentioned that people lived to, and it goes beyond 30 or 40. Methusela, near the beginning of the Bible, and his contemporaries mostly lived for 900-od years. Moses lived for about 120 years. Many lived for about 70 or 80 years. The apostle John is thought to have lived into his 90s.

Man is not an animal. Humans or mankind was created and seperate from the animals because God gave man a soul.

Since no one alive today actually knows what calender was used to record the passage of time when the bible starts with the story of creation, this is an unanswerable question.

For example, Noah was said to have lived 600 years and 120 of them were spent in building the ark. Job is said to have lived 120 years after losing everything and having God restore him. Moses who wrote the first 5 books of the bible lived 120 years.

Good question> In the Bible it says ppl. lived 700, 800, etc. years. They were by the moon in those days. Every full moon was a year. Lets say they lived 1200 years. Divide that by 12 and they were actually 100 years old as we know it today.
