When my mother found out she cried and my father got angry at my brother, so he ignors him ever since, and my two sisters calls him flunkie every chance they get. Will this affect him for years to come.

I'm sorry I can not pick a best answer because there are so many, I can't pick one over the other. Thank you so much for these great answers. I did tell them to stop doing that but they wouldn't listen to me. Again I really appreciate all of your great answers.

The only way a child can "flunk" kindergarten, is when they lack the motor skills and ability to learn like the rest of the children. YOUR PARENTS ARE TO BLAME!! It was THEIR job to make sure he knew basic things before entering kindergarten, and if they sensed he was having a problem they should have been involved with getting the help he needed. I think CPS needs to be called, because I sense there is more to this story then what is being told.

Wow...there's some great family dynamics! Yes, most definitely, your sisters calling him flunkie, and his dad ignoring him, will definitely have a NEGATIVE effect on him for the rest of his life.
Your family is TOTALLY over-reacting. Usually, being held back in Kindergarten is not an issue of not being smart, but insteand an issue of not being ready for full time school.
Good for the teacher for being concerned enough to want your brother to be able to absorb the lessons and learn something. Too bad a virtual stranger is the only one (besides you) who cares.
Shame on your family (and you can tell them I said so!), for behaving in such an infantile, immature and hateful manner.

take up for your little brother when someone tries to put him down. Two of my kids were put back in kindergarten because the teachers thought my children could not comprhend, when in fact the teacher was not taking the time to teach properly. Now one of them is a straight A student and the other an A-B student. Just help him when you are at home.

My son was held back in kindergarten also. He was smart enough, but was very shy and the teacher suggested he stay for one more year. After careful consideration I concurred. Today he is 26. He joined the Marines after graduating high school. Spent 6 years, went to Afghanistan, Haiti, etc., has a black belt in karate, is an avid hunter, happily married and is studying aviation in college he is half-way through his sophomore year, has a 3.9 average and just got his pilot's license. Print this out and give it to your parents, those late bloomers can really be suprising!

wow !!! it was just kindergarten...maybe they didn't think he was developmentally or emotionally ready..some children are just need to be held back so that they will be advanced enough for the next grade. there are certain requirements he must meet and if your parents aren't teaching him and helping him to reach these goals it is their fault not the child.....
it sounds like your parents aren't helping things, they are suppose to be the adults and tell him it's going to be OK...just means he'll be smarter than the other kids next year...why would they even show there emotions on this issue in front of him...what is he 5 yrs old ? they need to do some growing up and act like mature adults that they supposedly are
and you should set the example since you sound like the most adult person in the house....defend your little brother to EVERYONE and tell him it'll be alright and help him to learn what he needs to know

I was held back in First Grade, it had a life long effect...but not like you might think.
In the eigth grade I decided to become a straight A student and now I am a very succesful engineer.
The glass is half full (because I just drank it...LOL)

wow, how do you get left back in kindergarden? Is this some sort of joke? Did he not take naps and eat his snacks?lol. Of course its gonna affect him. If any of his friends finds out this information, he will be teased for the rest of his life so tell your sisters to keep their mouths shut. And how can your father be so tough on a little kid. That is not a good parent...ignoring the problem instead of supporting and trying to fix it.

If they're in Kindergarten ya this will effect them. They don't know much, and kids figure out things really easy when they're younger that effects them in the long run.

yeah.. it might. people have had to go to specialists to help them with there propblems when they get older... only in the worst possible sinareo though. Talk to your family tell them your hurting his education (he may feel he cant be smart enough) and his emotional stuff (he may feel unwanted). If this persists i would concider talking to a profesional to get help for him... and your family...
