A sect is usually a branch of a larger, predominant group. A cult is a stand alone group.

A sect is a part or branch of a religion. Catholics, orthodox, lutheran, baptist, methodist, mormon, etc. are sects within Christianity.

A cult is a religion without text or doctrine. They are centered around an individual who personally leads his/her followers. They worship this particular personality.

A cult is a smallish religion that other religions don't like to admit to being a religion. A sect is a sub-religion that the other sub-religions still think of as part of the religion.

They are both actually religious organizations but I think of them as the hate clubs like the Aryn Nation, KKK, Skin Heads, White Supremest and other dog excrement eating pieces of dung slime. No offense kisses Betty.
