I have a wife and 1 year old twins. We definitely need AWD so please don't suggest otherwise. Also, I like spirited driving. I've considered: the Audi A3, Subaru Outback, Passat Wagon, Volvo V50, RAV4, Tiburon...anything else?

well, my twins are 7 and I'm in the auto business, so here's a few things to chew on. You need something with a bit of room, as a double stroller won't fit in much other than an SUV or a wagon. In addition, the older they get, the more junk you'll need to carry.

General Motors makes a line of full-time AWD SUV's with the Chevy Equinox, Saturn Vue,ect. Sticker is less than $26k for most models, and milage is 25. V-6 with 185 horse is standard, and if you can find an '06, there's $3000 in rebate in the Northeast region, and probably about the same accross the country.

As to the spirited driving, it's a tough call. Is less than 200 horsepower spirited driving? I held on to my corvette for a few years trying to find ways to take just one kid, but the reality of being a father with twins kicked in and I guess I'll be trapped in SUV hell until they go away to college or I win the lottery. At least I don't have to drive a mini-van.

Best of luck with the twins... it get easier in a few years.

I agree on a few points already mentioned. AWD means nothing if you aren't using it with a quality set of winter tires. Also, you'll likely have to compromise on your fuel mileage requirements on most SUVs. It just won't be there in many cases; the extra weight of the drivetrain and vehicle in general prevents it, among other things. I do like the Subaru suggestions and really is the best bang for your buck when it comes to AWD security and fuel mileage. Legacy, Forester, Outback Wagon or the smaller Impreza. Can't really go wrong with any of these. Yes, some models do have their expensive problems, but luckily, most Subaru owners love their cars enough to get this taken care of.

Do you think there's a reason nissan called it the Moron-o?

The Torrent suggested above features easy access doors for the toddlers. You will find that more and more important as the kids get bigger. In NY they have to be in the car seat until 5 years old or 60ish lbs (my kids are older, I'm going by memory) and getting them in the car seat when they are 50 pounds will be a chore. The extra room will definately come in handy.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the Torrent will ever be a great autocrosser, but it does feature great power. And that power is backed by the new 5 year / 100,000 mile warranty. It's definately worth checking out.

Get a subaru wrx (sti if you can find one for the price). Do a little research on it. They are incredibly reliable, extremely fast, awd, 4-door and very safe.
