It's not, at least not any more.

Originally a top secret site where futuristic planes such as the U2 Spyplane and the B2 Stealth Bomber were first tested it has since become a "defunct" base, kept alive on a care and maintenance basis only.

This has been largely due to the publicity it received as the USA's top "Black Ops" test site during the 60's an early 70's.

Although any new "planes" are now tested at the Andrew's Air Force Base, people are still spell-bound at the thought of Area-51 and many false rumors exist about "crashed UFO's being housed there".

The reality is that there are more civilians working there now than military staff - hardly something that would be done at a top secret military site.

In addition, you can now buy extremely high quality satellite photographs of the base courtesy of the Russian military, who sold many of the pictures to budding entrepreneurs looking to make a quick buck by selling them to "UFO hunters".

I'm just going off of my own reasoning, but i think that's where they develop military and technological advances for wars and homeland security. I saw this program on the history channel and it talked about how the U.S. was trying to develop a crcular plane (flying saucer) during WWII.

It's not really. Try walking around any military base without clearance and see how far you get. It's basically where they test new equipment.

Because we don't want foreigners finding out about our military. That is why it is better than other countries: they want to advertise their tough military.
