Cheers Tank, portable ashtrays are available, sis brought me 2 from Scotland, same rules are already applied there. My kids are up but I didn't smoke around them, it's still imposing on peoples right to choose. xx

Etiquette, as a smoker I can honestly say I do not smoke where people are eating especially if in the company of non-smokers, if everyone smoked that would be different, but you would still wait till everyone had finished eating, am I right fellow smokers?

When everyone is forced to stop smoking, where is the government going to collect the revenue from that they are going to lose? By putting up everyone's taxes who get up off their backsides and go to work and pay too much already? Any ideas where they will get it from?

Good!
You talk about freedom of choice, where is my freedom of choice to not have to breath in smoke when I walk around, or when I am eating? I don't want to eat and have the taste of my food ruined by some selfish drug-addicted idiot lighting up in the corner.
It is a brilliant idea. There would never be a full ban on smoking because the government make too much money out the tax, but at the same time they also spend a lot of the tax on cleaning up the litter of smokers and also of taking care of them when they finally get cancer, and more importantly, when the people who they smoke around get cancer.
This is one good idea that this government have had, and they have not had many.

December 31st 2004 i stopped smoking after 16 years but i agree it should be banned (but before all you smokers start having a go) in restaurants and other places where people eat because even when i was a smoker i never lit up where people were eating and I'm sure other smokers would agree but as for other place it should be ok or many businesses will shut down people should have the right to choose whether they smoke or not

Well i Agree That smoking should be banned from Restuarants as Being a smoker myself and a family man i dont smoke in front of my children and theres nothing worse than trying to eat a meal when People are Puffing away..Altho i did remind a person once to put her *** On the other hand and have a bit of thought as i was becoming annoyed with inhaling other peoples smoke especially while eating...But on the other hand we should be allowed too smoke outside and if there is not Cig-Bin in sight then im sorry i will Flick my butt As far as it can go..Well im not exactly going to take it home and leave a burn in my pocket am i...Get Real ..!

Nikki got it right, In the US smoking is banned in most indoor places. Bars, any place that serves more than 10% profit of food, work places, Busses, trains, Taxie's etc. Its all because majority rules and the smokers never got off there backsides to vote when it counted. Not just smokes but Bar staff/managers etc who now loose a lot of business.

As a smoker I do think it is unfair that we are not given the freedom to smoke. I understand that non smokers have the right to breath in clean air but you also breath in carbon monoxide just from all the 4x4's driving about in London!! What are we going to ban people from driving too??
If i get lung cancer then that will be down to me and even of i need treatment from the NHS i would have paid for this in taxes on fags alone!! Whats to say that i won't get stabbed or shot for my mobile phone or £10 in my purse before then???
We are always being told not to smoke because we wont be treated on the nhs, not to eat fast food or be fat because we wont get treatment on the nhs. As a person that pays her ni and taxes and taxes on ciggies i should be given treatment no matter what.

Oh here we go again! Another flipping smoker bleating on about freedom of choice! What about the rights of the vast majority of the human race who don't smoke to be free to breathe clean air?
I should remind you that, in case you are unaware of it, Scotland has been operating a full smoking ban in all public places for several months now and already the Scottish Executive are reporting improvements in general public health, with record numbers of smokers seeking help in giving up this disgusting habit. I am personally delighted that smoking is banned in all public places. It is wonderful being able to spend an evening playing music in the pub and return home not stinking like the contents of an ash tray.
I wish you people would actually stop to see the mess you create from indulging in your filthy habit: the choking smoke screens which make our eyes sore and watery; the smell which catches the back of our throats and inundates our clothing; the unsightly nicotine staining on the walls of bars etc, and that's before you even start considering the chronic health problems caused by smoking cigarettes and the burden smoking-related diseases unnecessarily put on the NHS and the taxpayer who funds it.
Three years ago tonight (30th November), my Dad was taken away by a pulmonary embolism which was largely caused by his smoking habit. I miss my Dad very much, so how dare you complain about a measure which is designed to encourage people like you to kick the habit before you become a statistic like my Dad! If you're not going to help yourself, then don't expect me to have any sympathy for you when you're choking your guts up on your death bed.

I hate to say it, but everyone is jumping on that bandwagon.
We've been banned for awhile here in the US for quite some time. I think that with the rise of illness related to smoking, plus the cost of cigarettes, people are actually quitting.
Alot of places lost a load of business as a result. I used to smoke until I finally couldn't afford it-but I could care less if there's a smoking section in a place that i'm dining at. I think that in the world majority rules, so I think you're pretty much stuck.

Well I don't smoke, and I think that it is unfair how smokers are treated, I will not allow anyone to smoke in my house, but I chose to go to a friends house who does smoke, it should be more of a choice, true I don't like smoking around food, but your right it is big brother watching you, and where is it going ot stop.

Because smokers tend to keep quiet and mind their own business, the do-gooders (who probably NEVER visit a pub) are the loud ones, your freedom of choice is directly linked to your willingness to get off your butt and shout about it....
Wonder what is going to be next? Assuming the damage done is a reason for this, then alcohol use in the under 25's and those with problems should be on the agenda...

oh one minute, I forgot, all major political parties (in every sense of the word) are sponsored by brewery companies...
