Oh yes! It's stupidly annoying. My brother is 15 and he's been told that he's allowed to use 'txt spk' in his GCSE english exam, and won't get marked down!
Unfortunately this has everything to do with the state of education in this country in my opinion. Kids don't learn to read and write the way I was taught (I'm 21, so it wasn't that long ago). The fact that they're taught phonetics now doesn't help at all as many kids now spell a word the way it sounds.

However, I once got a text message from my mother in which she used no vowels. Quizzing her about this, I discovered that it was because she thought she was charged per character, not per message....

Not everyone has a dictionary to hand, and the Yahoo spell checker is often unreliable.
Sometimes it just goes on spinning, it refuses to accept many English spellings, and a little while ago it even challenged the word 'the', and offered 'TH' as an alternative, and when I selected 'the', it tried to put down 'thee.'
You are also guilty of it, you put 'txt speak' outside of the sample.

Actually, the people I associate with are fourth year English majors in college, and they IM and send e-mails that way. They think it's cool to type using gangsta language. People should have the right to make spelling and grammatical errors (jus 2 be gangsta haha), just as long as they are aware of the proper way of communicating lol.

People are so keen to rush off a stunningly intelligent answer they are too busy to check it all.

And if everyone wrote well punctuated, correctly spelt, perfect grammar the pedants would have nothing to do would they?

(english is traditionally written with a capital E by the way).

I so agree with you, I can catch some of the abbreviations but don't understand most of the so called English. Spell check is so simple, no reason to not catch as many errors as you can. Besides, who wants to sound illiterate and ignorant?

I suppose the text talk is computer etiquette. I can't seem to get the hang of it. Yahoo has made the spelling check super simple - it would be an easy way to improve ones spelling.

They probably don't realise there is such a thing, right above the reply box to check spellings.
I use it all the time,as i hate text talking,it drives me crazy trying to decipher the meanings.
I was taught at school to use proper English,so i do.

ABSOLUTELY! Some messages are from children and I am more forgiving of their errors. However, many adults just do not care. Many ask about medications they are taking, and cannot bother to look at the label so they can spell the name correctly.
