I am below sixty-five but near to. I am looking for a job for adults with applying more than ten time at many shopping centers; nowhere gives me a chance. The last time I've applyed in Mervyn shopping at Northgate Mall. Madam manager made an interview and gave me a drug testing with a suggestion of beginning wage. Everything was ok and I accepted. She advised me waiting some days. After that I got a letter from the personel manager in the office at the corporation which canceled me as a chooser. The additional question is why I am not?

In the US it is illegal to discriminate based on age. The law specifies "over 45" as the protected group. They should be able to give you a specific answer. A call stating that you feel that you may have been discriminated against should get you some answers. Mervyns is a huge company and would not want a lawsuit or bad publicity. I don't know what kind of job you applied for, but your grammar is not very good and could possibly be your down fall. Of course I am assuming that you write in a similar fashion that you speak.
Instead of randomly applying for jobs search the Internet for openings near you. HotJobs and CareerBuilder both have lots of low paying jobs. But, given your age you might look for a higher paying job in whatever field you did previously. A lot of people in your age group work teaching, either mentoring independently or teaching in the junior colleges. You should contact the one in your area (unless poor grammar really is your problem) and see if they are looking for a teacher in your field. Many times they will be happy, the classes that they offer depends on the teaching resources that they have available to them.

With the baby boomers sucking up all the social security I've paid during my working life - I have already resolved myself to working until well into my 80's or beyond. My father made enough money after he retired that he never applied for social security because someone else might need it. Unfortunately for me, that kind of ethic is rare and actually so uncommon for folks who think they are ENTITLED to something. Face it, there are a bunch of people out there bleeding the system, and I just realize that my tax dollars are going to pay for my parents and grandparents - but not me - so I just plan on working working working.

I think that's a personal choice on your part. You have to remember though that when interviewing for a job companies are looking for people that are younger because they know that they have more of a chance that they won't decide to retire. If you really want to keep working the best thing to do is present yourself nicely and show enthusiasm as well as your dedication that you will show if you get the job. Good Luck!

Honestly one day there should be a law where 60 and up dont have to work but there are laws against age discrimination. My grandfather fought a suit with the San Jose convention center basicly the city. Alot of people dont put forth the effort to go to the extent and when you do it is so worth it. l

Yes people over sixtyfive should be able to work, there is a woman who in my office who is 87 years old and she is a joy to work with she answered an ad for a medical records clerk and was hired, then when she started that position, 5 years ago she was only 82 then she did not click with the young girls in that department, because she had a work ethic that they didn't, so the manager in our billing department offered her a spot in there department, where she opens the mail, sends faxes mails correspondence, she is awesome, "cratchity sometimes and bitchy" but we love her.
keep looking all but one of the young girls that she started with in the first area are gone and she is still there.

Yes...actually retirement age should be from 25 to 40 then work the rest of your life that way you can enjoy retirement and do things

Of course 65+ year olds should be allowed to keep working. Many are younger and harder working than others who are younger. It is an individual thing.
Employers who overlook hiring older employees are missing good employees.

Yes they should be allowed, there's some 65year old that are in really good shape. As for y u werent chosen, i dont know, could have been they found someone else they thought was "better suited" etc.

Every human being on the planet should have the human right to seek employment. We all need to survive. Instead of picking on the old why dont you rephrase it to ask should people who are independently wealthy and have no need of employment be allowed to work? At least if they didnt have jobs they would still survive.

Yes. I plan on keeping in good shape so that when I am that age, I can find work. If your health fails, you will have a harder time finding work. Good luck....keep on trying and applying.
