It's to do with geometry and 'slippery when wet'. Basically the fibres on a jumper, because it is woven get more entangled. And here's the microscopic explanation...On a sheep all the fibres are aligned in the same direction.
A woolen jumper consists of woven fibres which are aligned a various angles.
A single wool fibre has downward facing serrated 'flanges', when wet, these, due to the reduction of friction, progressively 'lock-step' down each fibre, so reducing the overall volume of the material. Temperature merely increases the average speed of the molecules surrounding the fabric, agitating the fibres more, so accelerating the process.

Your jumpers shrink in the wash cos te water is to hot, rain generally doesn't reach 60'c so won't shrink the sheep but good question!

jumpers only shrink if you wash them in warm/hot water. rain is cold and when the wool is on the sheep the natural oils make it waterproof.

purely a wager yet Sheep's wool is roofed in an oily substance all of us comprehend of as lanolin. it quite is far flung from the fibers in the past transforming into yarn. That substance is then utilized in lots of elegance products. It probable makes the water bead instead of soak in.

Because sheep are made of flesh, skin, bones etc, just like us. We don't shrink when we get wet, do we?

Because their fleece is soaked in lanolin which makes it waterproof, however too much water will make it sodden, hence the reason sheep drown if they fall into deep water.
