You mean to eat the tree that bears the knowledge of good and evil. We did! We are here, aren't we? Booted out from paradise and as a consequence suffers a mortal life?
That tree is a metaphor that once a spirit becomes a living soul by fusing itself to a material energy(a physical body) it becomes the recipient of knowledge( good or evil). It will also experience death(represented by another metaphor "God taking away the tree of life). The serpent is a metaphor of material energy, a necessary component for the spirit to learn. That's way s pirit is always in the heart of every soul.
God, Adam and Eve, tree of life, tree of knowledge, serpent, paradise(spiritual world), all of these tells us about life why how it started and how it would end in a continuingcycle of karma and rebirth.

I'd hope I would be smart enough to partake of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Had Adam and Eve not partaken they would not know good or evil, joy or sorrow, or anything. They would be emotionless. Without the ability to sin, and experience sorrow, you cannot know what it really feels like to do good or experience happiness. Additionally, they would not have procreated, and therefore humanity would not be.

I think the story is a parable. When we are children our parents care for and protect us.I think the moral of the story is that adam and eve partook of the fruit of independence and liberty to go forth and risk danger to fulfil themselves, as children do when they must necessarily break free of their parental bonds.

Yes. I totally deserve equality with god and who does he think he is anyway, keeping people like ignorant sheep in a zoo? I deserve free agency and knowledge. You can learn a great deal about Christian thought versus freethinking from their fables. They are symbols - but useful symbols nonetheless. Anyone with any sense can see the serpent is the hero of that tale.

Its the apple of knowledge. If I hadn't eaten it yet and become sentient, then how am I supposed to decide to eat it or not?
