This is a very basic algebra question...let's work up a formula to get the answer, then you can solve it.
$52 (total charge) - $16 (cost of material) = $36
If you have a total of $36 in labor costs, and you charge $4 per hour, then divide the total cost of labor by the cost per hour, and you wind up with the total number of hours worked. So...
$36 divided by $4 = ???
Once you understand and remember how to work out formulas like this, basic algebra is a breeze! Good luck!

If materials cost you $16 out of your overall charge, you have to subtract that from the total:
$52 - $16 = $36
Now that you have a subtotal, which now only represents the money you charged for labor, you can devide that amount by the hourly wage:
$36 / $4 = 9 hrs.
Algebraically (using variables), the equation would probably look something like this:
52 - 16 = X (where X = the subtotal for the cost of labor);
X = 36
4 (Y) = X (where Y = the nuber of hours you worked)
4 (Y) = 36 ( where the value for X has been plugged in)
Y= 36 / 4 (where the value for Y has been isolated)
Y = 9
Hope that helps!

The answer is C 9 hours. $52-$16 = $36 which is the cost for the labor. 36/4 = 9 hours of work

Just use an equation.
y=4x+16
Substitute the possible answers into the equation for x.
y=4(9)+16
y=36+16=52
C. 9 Hours

well... 52-16=36
36/4=9 hours
just break the problem down and work small parts at a time.

9 hours. (If this is for class you really should try to do this yourself. you won't learn otherwise).
