A dark brown to a medium color. You don't want it too light unless you are going to get it died really often, because then it will show really bad when it grows out. But if you get it died all of the time any color would be good that goes with your skin color.

I have a friend from Trinidad who is a natural raven-haired girl. She's been putting a purpleish red color in her hair and just a few highlights of a dark honey-brown for years. She never overdoes it, only uses the colors as more of a blend than a total change of color.
It is very complimentary to her black & brown features/coloring.
No matter what lighting she is under, it looks like she has a splash of sunlight on her all the time, bringing out the richest tones in her hair.
In fact, I thought it WAS her natural color until it was fading :P
Still, she keeps the majority of her hair black - especially the under layers. I don't know if it is on purpose or not, but either way it looks the most pretty and natural.
My aunt, who also is a natural raven-haired woman, puts a medium brown in her hair to lighten it up which softens the cloud of hair around her face and thus makes her face look softer and younger. Sometimes she'll add dark red-toned highlights (auburn) or deep purple-red highlights but because her skin is white it doesn't look as natural.
It does look alright. It just gives her hair more of a "wig" look than natural growing hair. :P
All in all, I would suggest avoiding too light of colors because they can make your skin look stripped of it's brilliance and vitality if you have the wrong shade of hair hanging next to it.
Playing with colors is fun though, so try what you like and enjoy! :)

I don't really think you should lighten the hair very much. This would require some amount of bleach, as black hair is impossible to lighten without it. Your color options depend on whether or not you want a natural shade. I have seen many people with dark hair put burgundy, blue, and even purple tints on their hair and it looked good. Otherwise I would go with some subtle highlights to soften the color. Chocolate brown, mahogany, etc. Nothing too light.

It is up to you at the end of the day but to not dye it blonde it will go green or a weird looking colour. Try brown or a sort of reddish browny colour do not go to far away from black incase you do not like it.

Black-haired people tend to be very lucky - they can get away with everything apart from the palest blondes, and even then some darker-skinned black-haired people can do platinum!
My advice - go for something that will a) suit your skin tone and b) suit your personality! Personally, I always go for deep, vibrant reds - but I'm a natural ginger so I really don't know.
Personality counts - make sure you don't loose track of who you are underneath it all!

colours will not show up properly on black hair unless you lighten it with a hair lightener first. If you want highlights then divide off the parts of your hair you want to lighten , put on the lightener and wrap the hair in foil to keep it away from the rest.Wash it off and then re do the streaks with the colour of your choice in the same way.

As a fellow black-haired person, I would like to suggest something with red in it. I used to get red highlights in my hair and they stood out yet blended in very well at the same time. You don't want to do anything dramatic like blonde.
However, as I have gotten older, I have learned to embrace my natural colour and I have realized...black is beautiful! So I would also recommend that you keep your black hair and show it off cause it's hot! =D

It's more important to go with a colour that works with your skin tone, and not worry too much about your hair color. But don't go light, unless you plan on spending a lot on it! Blonde is high-maintenence. If you don't want to waste much money on hair dye, go with something that's dark.

To get any other color you would have to lighten first, black hair is the hardest color to get rid of but it is possible. If you dont want to ligthten it first (does cause some damage to hair) then it'll be a process of slowly coloring it brownish colors and getting the black out.

what colour do you want to be? get some bleach and you can be anything you like. I would suggest only putting the bleach in for 20 mins to keep it darker, else it will look stupid on you! a nice brunette would be a good transition.
