I mean before your reeinlisment period is over. I'm just wondering because my father and ex husband were in the army for over 23 yrs each and my niece is going in and she said they never said anything about that to her. My father served in gulf war and still did his Korea stint. so did my ex-husband. just wondering. They both retired in the late 80's.

you dont HAVE to serve a hardship tour. Some parts of Korea are considered unaccompanied (governemtn won't move family there) tour or harship tour. Iraq and Afghan are not hardship tours, they are deployments for units assigned other places. Make no mistake though, they are HARD but not technically a hardhip tour. They are deployments. Korea is the only "hardship" tour, unless you are one of the people that go to Diego Garcia, Johston Atoll or other remote locations. All those tours are luck of the draw. I have seen people go to Korea many times in 20 years, some never. I have seen some go to OIF/OEF 3-5 times, some never. It all depends on where the army puts you and if that unit is going somewhere.

No, technically speaking you do not have to serve a hardship tour of duty. However be advised that sometime sooner or later every member of the Army will find him or herself in Iraq or Afghanistan.

there are no such things as hardship tours anymore...its now called iraq and afghanistan. if you join the military now, you are most likely going to serve overseas in a deployment of some kind. you can still get orders for korea and still be sent to iraq from there as well.

I am not in the military, but the U.S. army is so strapped right now that they will send anyone anywhere at anytime.
