I own two.I have a Rover 218sld Turbo.Beautiful car to drive,handles really well.
Also i own a Peugeot 405 exec turbo diesel. This is also a great car to drive.Only disadvantage,it has leather seats.
Both cars are very quick of the mark,as both have turbo's.
Recently seen by the RAC,due to a battery problem, and the mechanic said if a diesel is well looked after,it can last for 500,000 miles or more.
My Rover has approx 170,000
The Peugeot has approx 265,000 miles on the clock.
I must admit i was very reluctant to have a diesel,as i always thought that they were noisy and smelly.
After driving my Rover 3/4 times i was hooked. Now i wouldn't consider going back to a petrol.

Well out of the 4000 or so customers I have had in The EU I can tell you which ones have the most complaints and which ones have the least.
I built a VW diesel out of scrap cars and with a few tweaks it got 50+mpg towed my full size Chevy Van when it broke down.
And had a top speed of 135mph at one point I was commuting and driving 2000 miles per week. One tough little car.
We have a ford 2 litre turbo diesel escort now it is pretty good but has had a few problems, little things like the seals on the fuel pump do wear out and will leak. Simple to fix if you know how but take it to a garage and you can get taken for a very expensive ride.
The inter-cooler is really good but the water pump is a nightmare to replace.
Future maintenance things to keep in mind.
VW is good but repairs can be very expensive such it the case with all German cars.
Keep in mind a little TLC and preventive maintenance will keep any car on the road.

25000 miles is powerful, on everyday seek for extra or less 12000 a 300 and sixty 5 days (ish) insurance group 2 is larger..the decrease the insurance group the extra low-priced your insurance would be petrol is extra low-priced to purchase yet diesal will final longer...diesal is extra environmantally adverse in the experience that your into all that...in my view i might recommend petrol yet its your decision. the size of engine relies upon on the motor vehicle if its your first motor vehicle i might propose a smaller engine...say a a million.3 as you wont get insured on a extra effectual motor vehicle besides. my first motor vehicle that i extra some months in the past is a ford ka a million.3 insurance group 2 petrol and that i might propose a ka to everybody commencing utilising!! wish this helped :)
