This is a straight question. Either this is a Bible teaching with verses that prove it or this is not a teaching from the Bible. Not an opinion. Prove it.
Only 54 verses mention hell in the Bible. None of them indicate an eternity of torment in flames of fire. No where in the Bible are people made immortal so they can live forever in pain. Everlasting life in heaven or hell is not promised to those who reject the love of God. Immortality is not promised to those who prefer to have their own way and hold on to an unChristlike character. It is misrepresentation of God’s character to suggest that He will sentence people, even the wicked, to an eternity of burning. No verse in the Bible suggests that this will happen.
The punishment of those who are lost will result in the end of their existence forever. No eternal life with eternal punishing. No eternal suffering. It is a false teaching that has done a lot of damage.
Jesus used the greek word Gehenna for hell in the Bible and Gehenna was an actual place of burning right outside Jerusalem where all the garbage of the city and even dead bodies ware burned continually. If anything fell outside of the flames, worms and maggots quickly consumed it. “worm dieth not” The word Gehenna was used figuratively to illustrate the punishment of those whose life choices have unprepared them for heaven.

What will happen to the wicked in hellfire?

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." Revelation 21:8.
The wicked are not immortal. The Bible says they will "perish", "burn up" and "be destroyed".

Answer: The wicked die the second death in hellfire. If the wicked lived forever being tortured in hell, they would be immortal. But this is impossible, because the Bible says God "only hath immortality." 1 Timothy 6:16. When Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden of Eden, an angel was posted to guard the tree of life so that sinners would not eat of the tree and "live for ever." Genesis 3:22-24. The teaching that sinners are immortal in hell originated with Satan and is completely untrue. God prevented this when sin entered this earth by guarding the tree of life.

Bible Clear--Wicked Obliterated
The Bible says the wicked suffer "death" (Romans 6:23), will suffer "destruction" (Job 21:30), "shall perish" (Psalms 37:20), will "burn" up (Malachi 4:1), "shall be destroyed together" (Psalms 37:38), will "consume away" (Psalms 37:20), "shall be cut off" (Psalms 37:9), "shall be slain" (Psalms 62:3). God will "destroy" them (Psalms 145:20), and "fire shall devour them" (Psalms 21:9). Note that all of these references make it clear that the wicked die and are destroyed. They do not live forever in misery.

Yeah, actually, the bible says that death and Hades(greek word for hell) will be thrown into the Lake of fire which is hte second death at Revelation 20; 13 and 14. What's interesting about Gehenna , which some bibles mistakenly translate as hell, is that only the dead bodies of criminals were thrown, so no living creature was burned alive, although this happened later during the inquisition and witch trials.

Edit: Scriptureman is using a parable to prove a point. The fact is that one little drop of water would not really help somebody in burning torment , so the story must be talking about something else. People also forget that Jesus himself was in hell for 3 days but he compared it to being in the belly of a whale like Jonah was.

I am a Christian, non-denominational Bible teacher. A few years back I wrestled with this question myself and prepared a 60-page study for myself on the question. I looked up and studied every verse and analyzed every argument about the nature of the lake of fire. My conclusion: the unrighteous actually perish in the lake of fire (e.g. no eternal, conscience torment).

However, there are several verses the "suggest" a conscience, eternal suffering (Matt 25:46, Rev 20:10). That's why this is what most Christians believe. Also, there are several verses that say there is conscience torment after death (e.g. weeping and gnashing of teeth, etc.) What most don't understand is this conscience torment is in HADES (on the torment side) and NOT in the lake of fire. But Hades will be brought before the Great White Throne and THEN thrown into the lake of fire. There aren't any verses in the Bible that talk of a conscience torment AFTER being thrown into the lake of fire.

Also recognize that there are a couple cult groups that teach destruction in the lake of fire...don't get connected with them based on this doctrine alone.

Finally, more and more theologians have come to the same conclusion. In recent years, the term "conditional immortality" has been used to describe this doctrinal view.

Scriptureman says:

Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
Luk 16:23 And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

the torment of Hell is mentioned multiple times, in cases such as
"... there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
but scriptureman beat me to the passage that tells of Hell the best.
Luke 16 starting in verse 19.

Latin Vulgate
Douay-Rheims Bible

The Apocalypse Of Saint John
Chapter 22

11 He that hurteth, let him hurt still: and he that is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is just, let him be justified still: and he that is holy, let him be sanctified still. 12 Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to every man according to his works. 13 I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. 14 Blessed are they that wash their robes in the blood of the Lamb: that they may have a right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.

16 I Jesus have sent my angel, to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the root and stock of David, the bright and morning star. 17 And the spirit and the bride say: Come. And he that heareth, let him say: Come. And he that thirsteth, let him come: and he that will, let him take the water of life, freely.

I totally agree with you on that point. Also, the Bible tells us to put on immortality (1 Cor. 15:53-54). If we are to put on immortality , it must mean we are mortal to begin with, right?
