What is the difference, if any, between german wirehair and a drathaar?

Some are of the opinion there is no difference - Deutsch drathaar translates to German wirehair, but they're not AKC registerable.

Different names same dog.
My uncle breeds them and has had many field champions in his kennel. All of his dogs are registered with the AKC and hold AKC titles.
When he advertises to sell pups he calls them drathaars.
