Chemotherapy is a prescription so a doctor's script is needed. The Emergency Room doesn't have the medications available to fill your mother's chemo prescription nor do they have the types of physicians available to administer and monitor chemotherapy. If your mother requires chemo, the prescribing physician is required to assist you in obtaining this treatment.

ER is definitely not the place for chemotherapy. In fact they will NOT undertake it there. Chemo is done in a cancer clinic. Your state medicaid should subsidise the cost however if the copayment is too high ask for a social work consult. The social workers at your hospital can and will approach various charities and benevolent funds. Also try applying to participate in clinical trials. Very often the medicine is free.

Absolutely not! They will not give chemo. as a ER patient. If the hospital is full and they are admitted and have to be held in the ER then a nurse would have to come to the ER to administer the drug with orders from the oncologist. This is not the norm!

Emergency rooms are not set up to provide this kind of service, since it's not a medical emergency. You and your mother should speak with her doctor about chemo arrangements. If payment is a problem you can hook into the hospital where the doctor has his/her privileges and talk with one of the hospital's social workers about the financial angle.

No ERs are for acute situations. they don't have the ability to do chemotherapy. Is this question due to the fact that your mom does not have insurance? If so, go to the hospital. there, financial administrators will be able to assist your mom with medicare/medicaid as well as other possibilities with your state programs.

I wouldn't think so but, why would she want to.

Have a friend call your nearest Social Security Office (SSI, Social Security Insurance) Or go in person, this is better yet, there's one in every city or, go to your nearest Medicaid office or, Medicare office. Explain your situation to them. Bring with you all pertinent data concerning your moms case.

Why hasn't your doctors office helped your mother with this? They usually are there for the patients to aid in paperwork and authoritative branches of the government also, besides healing.
Last but not least the administrative department of your local hospital may help. It's to their interests also. Take care

Chemo is not given in emergenices. She can get a consult from an oncologist, but not treatment. She should move to a state where she can get free care (like MA).
