Yes, you can lie down if you request it.

They will tie a rubber band around your arm at the bicep. This causes the veins to swell a bit, making it easier to find them.

They will insert a double ended needle into the vein and then put a vacuum tube on the other end. It will fill with the correct level of blood.

Depending on what tests the Doctor ordered, they may fill several of these tubes. The use of the double ended needle means they only have to poke you once. They may ask you to make a fist.

About the time they are done they will remove the rubber band.

You get a cotton swab and then a small band aid and you are finished!

My first advice is to let the nurse or lab tech know how you are feeling. It's okay to tell them that you are nervous. This will usually prompt them to walk you through it. They will also be more likely to keep a closer eye on you incase you start to feel ill or dizzy.

The procedure for a blood draw....
First they will put a touriquet on your arms (it feels like a tight rubberband). At this time they are only looking for the best vein from which to draw the blood.
Next they will clean the site with an alcohol swab. Then they will use a small needle and insert it into the vein. Then that's it the worst part is over. After that depending on how much blood they need they will just change the blood tubes or the syringe. Then they will release the tourniquet and put on a band aid.

The key is to make sure you hold still!! If you move around you could cause the vein to blow (which means that you will be left with a bruise and they won't be able to obtain the samples that they need) So just take a deep breath, then relax and close your eyes and you should be okay.

They put you in a chair which has a place for you to rest your arm. Then they use a tourniquet and then try and find a nice good vein that is large and protruding slightly. They they stick a fairly large needle in which is nontheless very sharp and doesnt hurt going in. Then they ask you to squeeze your hand. assuming your blood is flowing well then can get a few vials in moments, jsut don't look down. Then theyre hold it to stop the bleeding as they pull the needle out, which also nicely stops it from hurting coming out, and probably tape gauze to it. Then you're catch the tape on something later and it will hurt. But the actual test is fine :) Needles and blood phobia is not a proble, just don't look. It is fast and painless so there's no reason to notice it unless you watch them.

It's a piece of cake. I draw blood all the time. If you are really afraid of needles you can ask to lie down for the draw. Make sure you drink plenty of water today and the day of the draw. This will make drawing your blood easier.

Good Luck, you will do just fine!!

blood test should be coming from a vein in your arm, sitting up it doesn't hurt as bad as you think keep pumping your fist so your vein will pop out and make it easily accessible, take something you can squezze in the other hand while they are getting the blood, and don't look. ask for a butterfly needle because they are smaller. get ice cream when u are done.

Nothing will happen!

Just tell the nurse you don't like needles and you don't want to see them.....

I doubt you will feel a thing!
