The myth says that grades used to be "A" "B" "C" "D" and "E" with "E" being the failing grade, but the kids tried to convince their parents that "E" stood for "E"xcellent. So they dropped the "E" and switched to "F" for "F"ailure. I don't know how much truth there is to that story though.

There are some teachers and school systems that do grade with the letter E. If the student failed, an E can be given for giving A true EFFORT.

I think "F" is supposed to represent "Fail". I think Russ the Bus might be right that not using "E" was avoiding a mixup with other kinds of grades.
But it's not that way in all schools. The university where I work has grades A through E.

the letter E was once used to represent the grade 0......so if u got a 1 you passed just with a low score...eventually it was thought that it was too easy and kids werent getting an education....so they increased it to 55 and lower- failing.......then F came in to represent failing...F, failing, get it...then, they thought it was unfair for students to pass this way because they said passing with a 99 was the same as a 91.....so they made the - and +...+ were in the highs 789...- were in the lows...123

E means "Excellent" and Teachers have a code, never to give an E, as no one can be that good, there always room for improvement.

At my University the lowest grade you can get is an E.

I think "F's" are more for high school and grade school though I am not sure why.

I woyuld guess because when your younger we got graded on our conduct and recieved grades like E(excellent)N(needs improvement),U(uinsatisfactory)P(poor)...I dont remember what other ones there were but I guess they didnt wanna mix up your actual grades with your conduct grades

in the grading scale E means excellent and in todays schools that is an impossible thing so they do not even use it anymore.

Because they needed A,B,C,and D to show well above standard, above standard, at standard, and below standard. They had no need for a E. F was needed to stand for flunk
