I was talking to a co-worker who had braces and the question came up as to what prevents them from oxidizing (rusting) since they are metal and the mouth is constantly damp/wet from saliva and ingested liquids such as water, soda and milk.

Braces are made from alloys that don't rust. Stainless steel is a primary component. Titanium and other metals help also.

All metals don't rust. Silver & gold for example. Certain alloys don't rust. Not all, but many stainless steels don't rust. I'm not sure, but I think braces are silver plated.

I agree, they are made from stainless steel, and it does not oxidize... What a mess it would be using regular steel...yuck...
