Alright, here's the deal: I just bought a pc laptop (a necessary evil) for lawschool. Having been a happy Mac-user for the past few years, I begrudgingly re-enter the world of viruses, operating system gliches, defragging, updating, constant maintenance and hard drive failures. XP Pro is the operating system I have on this computer, and now there's this upgrade to Vista. Should I stick with XP Pro or upgrade? My PC friendly friends advise that Vista will have more bugs than Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Your thoughts? Upgrade to Vista or Stay the Course with XP Pro?

I would recommend not upgrading unless you needed to.

Vista is a new technology, and new technologies will always have bugs.

XP is tried, tested, and stands the test of time very well.

If XP works fine for you, I would keep using it until Microsoft stops supporting it... Which won't be for quite a few years down the road.

I can give you a couple answers to this question. If you have everything you need, then don't switch. If you are looking for more features and functionality, then consider upgrading to Vista. Just be aware that Vista does require more resources if you are looking for a decent user experience. The recommended amount of memory is 512MB. I would personally recommend 1GB. I would also check with your laptop manufacturer to see if it is Vista Capable. There is an upgrade advisor that can help with this. Just look on the website http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista and click on the 'Get Ready' section.

As far as the comments above stating that MS didn't talk to other companies, I'm sorry, that just isn't true.

Well, as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, my advice is to upgrade to Vista only if you have a really, really good reason. It's a brand-new release with a heavily modified kernel. Microsoft's been reluctant (at best) to share information with antivirus providers and to the extent that they have, the new kernel disables some of their most powerful antivirus tools. (In the name of better security, no less). There are bound to be a host of issues, problems, patches, etc. It's also a complete resource hog, so unless you have an enormous amount of horsepower in your new laptop... well, try driving a semi down the road with a 4 cylinder engine. You'll get about the same effect.

Oh... did I mention that all the software designed for XP has to be tested/modified before it will be sure to work on Vista?

I agree with the other two people...don't upgrade to Vista yet. I was going to wait until they have all the bugs worked out of it. I have heard from other IT people that they probably won't buy/upgrade to it until a SP2 comes out for it. Right now I am happy with XP Pro...but I do miss my Windows 98

Why would you switch to a PC for law school? You could have bought an Intel based Macintosh and loaded Windows on to it.

one is 64bit and one is 32bit. 64bit is made to procedure code at 64bits at a time. that's assume to be swifter even though it truly isn't even as it comes all the way down to it. via this classes should be written for 64bit or 32bit. more and more issues properly be 64bit contained in the destiny.

your friend is right, hahaha.

I would think twice, since windows vista is a more resource-consuming program, and I'm not sure if it worth it...
