Why dad is a stroke victim and is unable to walk. His short term memory is not very good because when I ask him basic questions such as what did u eat today he never remembers. In June I placed him in a home adult foster care facility. It is run out of a woman's home and it has 3 residents living their.
My dad came from an assisted living facility in another state for about 3 years and I didn't really care for it. The staff seemed somewhat not personal with the residents. Everytime I visited residents were always left just sitting in a corner just staring off into space.
Now that he is here closer to me I am able to visit him several times a week, but he is depressed and it is hard to get him to speak sometimes.
I like where he is staying. He is kept clean, neat and fed. But how do you go about making sure that every dollar that he gets is going to what it is supposed to be going to and not going into somone's pockets?

How old is your dad?I am sure he is depressed. I mean he cant do things he use to do. I am sure he was an active man and then he wakes up one day and the rug is pulled right out of him. Hell, he cant even communicate with a daughter I am sure he loves very much. After he had his stroke did they give him anything for depression? Can you imagine one day waking up and not being able to do any of the things other people take for granted?I am sure he is getting everything that he is suppose to get. And it is good they are keeping him fed and clean. And it is real good you can see him more often. That may help.He is going to need a lot of family support.and some one in the professional field to help him with his depression. I will be praying for you hon.

I worked as a CNA in a nursing home for 9 years. If he is being kept clean and shaven, that is an excellent indicator he is being cared for. If you can visit unannounced, that is the best way to "audit" and personally rate the facility. Talk to the social worker and or activity director to find out what they are doing for your father when it comes to socialization and rehabilitation.

Just being there on a regular basis will be good for your father and his health. Also, visiting regularly gives you the opportunity to interact with the care givers and nurses. That makes it easier to convey any concerns or ask any questions regarding your father's care. Also, you can let the staff know how you want things done (with in reason) or how your father was use to doing things before his stroke. That too, will give your father a sense of normalcy making his rehabilitation easier.

I wish you and your father all the best!

Obviously if it is a private home someone is making something from it or else they wouldn't be doing it. Sounds like they are taking pretty good care of him. I would speak to them about daily schedules to make sure you dad is being interactive with others. Depression is a common symptom with stroke victims so you may want to speak to his doctor about prescribing something or checking his B12 and Folate. These have a lot to do with healthy brain function as well as memory and depression.

check on him frequently (and at irregular times....if they know you always come after work at 6:00 then they are likely to be on good behavior at that time)....
check with the better busines bureau maybe and see if there are any complaints
talk to the staff (be polite of course) and ask about his routine when you are not there
consider installing a hidden camera in his room
