I am new dog owner of a short haired black lab who I have had for a little over a year. I just returned home from Thanksgiving and i could finally smell how much my house, especially the first floor where my dog lives, smells of dog. He has shiny healthy short haired black coat and barely sheds, but I cannot seem to escape the dog smell that i really did not smell or realize before! I can only wonder what other people think when they come over to my house. Granted, it is not nearly as bad as other people's dogs i know, but I much more aware of it now. Please help.

Odo-ban ( can be purchased at sams club i dont know whereelse) can remove even the smell of DEATH so im fairly certain it would work for your dog odor issue. Labs get a " humid dog" smell on things. ( id know ive got 2 and rescue many others) shampooing all shampooable placed will also reduce the odor.. febreeze works.. but very short term. Good luck! Also keep baking soda in the places she likes to sleep.. u can vaccum it up every couple days...

Clean everything in your house, and clean it regularly.
Carpet: you can buy a scented carpet powder (specially made to be vacuumed) and baking soda. Pour the scented powder and follow with pouring baking soda over it, and then vacuuming all of that up. Repeat once a day to once a week until the smell is gone.
Floors: vacuum all the dirt and then wash the floors with cleaner.
Furniture: be careful with what fabric they are made out of, some are OK to use pet odor removal products on, and some will change color or stain. Try Febreeze (Renzuit also makes an odor removing product.) Wash all pet furniture/beds weekly.
Window Treatments: some are washable, but if they are not, try
Febreeze or the Renzuit alternative.
Overall Smell: Burn incense or candles. You can also buy spray air-fresheners. These are nice to quickly make a room smell nice, but they don't last longer than a few minutes to a half hour.
Dog: It's not recommended to bath a dog more than once a month. Although, if you are about to have a party or large group over, you can bath the dog before hand so he smells nice. Make sure the soap is made for dogs, since human shampoo can irritate the skin. Any pet store will sell soap for dogs. Also, pet stores sell wipes or water-less bath wipes, which can be used more often. These can help Fido smell good for the party. Make sure not to use them too often, or the dog's skin might get irritated. A few signs are: increased hair shedding, increased itching and scratching, dandruff.

For pet odour, there are two types of products.
1 - Items that cover up the smell. ie Febreeze, plug ins, air fresheners etc.
2 - Items that remove the smell. ie. carpet deoderizers, baking soda, enzyme cleaners etc.
I would use a powder deoderizer or baking soda on any carpets or upholstered surfaces ie couch, chairs. Sprinkle it on, leave it for an hour, then vaccuum it up with your weekly cleaning.
During the week, I would spray febreeze on your couch and plug in a few scents. If your expecting company, throw on a scented candle or two, that should do the trick!
Also, bathe your lab regularly. It's the oil on the fur that contains the scent. I'm sure you do this already. :)

if you're going to start using a product for the dog's odor, you should ask your vet about it first. i heard that air fresheners/sprays/floor waxes - things like that, may be harmful to dogs. I'm not sure if all of them are or just some of them. Dogs have sensitive sense of smell so what is safe for humans may be harmful to them. So to be on the safe side, consult with your vet.

I have a dog and 2 cats.. Febreeze works great. They have different strengths and scents. For carpet stains, use spot shot.. i was amazed the first time i used it. Also, Arm & Hammer has a powder for carpets that you vacuum up. It helps with odor and releases the hair in the carpet.

Febreeze works well, but in the long term you might want to change the dogs diet - wet food causes dogs to fart, and that smell is really REALLY hard to get rid of... between vitamins you can pick up at the vets and dry food, your dog can maintain its coat and be a little healthier :-)
It might be hard to start the dog at first, but eventually s/he will get with the program.

well there is a product called odo ban and i swear by it .after having many doggie accidents in the home where i used to live . The odo ban was a real floor and odor saver and my vet uses it too you can purchase it at sams club or kash and karry . it really does work and does remove the odor. good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

I have a few of the "Plug in" type air fresheners around the house, they work much better than any type of sprays!

its this special formula called natural formula you can get it at petsmart. you can also spray your dog in dog colone. it works really well.
