My father-in-law has a live in girlfriend of 10 years that I need to send a birthday card to. They tell everyone they are married and they sign their names Mr. & Mrs. Thomas. Should I send the card to Mrs. Ruth Thomas even though they are not married????

Hmmm, tough choice here.

On the one hand, they aren't married but lie to everyone that they are Mr. and Mrs. Now they want everyone to join in on the lie and treat them like husband and wife without having to spend the $50 for a marriage certificate.

On the other hand, they ask people to call them Mr. and Mrs...
Did they insist that you call them that as well?

I would address it Mr. Thomas and Ruth, then support it with a lighthearted "until you REALLY get married, that is who you REALLY are".

Not with a harsh tone, but a light air of confidence. They can't fool you, since you are family.

Since they tell everyone that, then do address her as Mrs. Ruth Thomas to be polite.

If it will make both of them happy address her as Mrs Ruth Thomas . For all you know, they could have had a secret wedding ceremony.

They may have had a secret quickie wedding that you don't know about. To cover all your bases, send it to Mrs. Ruth HerMaidenName-Thomas. That way you are acknowledging that they are not married, yet they wish to be considered as such.

You address the person in question as they would like to be addressed. They have told you what that is.

Although you may not approve, etiquette dictates that you comply.

Of course, she calls herself like that so I think you should go by it too, besides it will make her feel part of the family.
Greetings!★
