Considering a non-stop airplane flight across the United States, why is the air time LESS flying from the west coast to the east coast than from the east coast to the west coast?

wind current. Also-if you leave from a NY airport they take on a few extra minutes for the time you end up sitting on the runway...

It's not the jet stream. It's the prevailing winds which flow west to east in the northern hemisphere. These winds help the aircraft move faster in terms of groundspeed when travelling west to east but work against it going the opposite direction.

The longer trip is the result of flying into strong winds that occur at high altitudes. Flying west to east, the wind is pushing the plane. Flying the other direction the plane has to push against the wind.

Non provide up la certain flights departing from the NYC area have an anticipated flight time of about 5 hours 40 5 minutes to 6 hours 1/2-hour. Non provide up flights interior the different direction have an anticipated flight time of between 5 hours to 5 hours 40 5 minutes. those all do no longer contain any severe head/tailwinds for you to journey in flight. I were on flights the position we've experienced tailwinds of 220 mph, bringing our floor speed to about 720-750 mph which seriously decreased our shuttle time.

wind current... ie: jet stream. You're with it going east against it coming west.

The Jet stream. Plane goes faster when it flies with it and slower when it flies against it.
