Males and females can both have orange cheeks, males usually have very very bright orange cheeks as compared to the females however males are usually the ones who whistle or talk. If you really want to be sure pick up bird talk magazine and look for a lab that does DNA sexing for $20 a bird. Thats what I did. When you bring your bird in to get their nails clipped have them clip one and collect a little bit of blood on the DNA collection card, mail it in and in a week you'll know if they're males or females. They can fool you sometimes.

Male Cockatiels are more colorful and they colors are brighter then female ones. Female colors are usually dull. The males can also learn words. When the females can only whistle. And if they are fighting its other because they are both males or females they don't usually do good in on cage together. Females also can be meaner then the males and have more of an attitude. Also if they are females they will lay eggs. So if one is a female and the other is a male you could end up with babies. If they are in the same cage it might be smart to get another cage.

A special vet knowledgeable about birds could possible tell you the sex. The male cockatiel has brighter colors, is usually more vocal and teachable than the female. If they are fighting or one bites the other, they may both be male ad need to be separated. Cockatiels are great pets, but they need lots of attention to become tame. You can train them to sing, whistle and speak with patience. My last one learned the Andy Griffith theme song, how to say "Pretty Bird," and "Hello." She/he also learned their name. I didn't know until after "she" died that she was actually a male...

Pations is the key. They probably met when you got them. It may take up to 6 months for them to bond. For my birds it took 4 months. So just leave them alone and if you see them spending time with each other or eating together then its a good sign that the birds are going to become pair-bonded.
Check the links out, they give a little info on gendering a cocaktiel. It really depends on what colour they are.

The most and brightest one is the male . He will also be loud. The bitting will take awhile to stop, if there wings are kept clipped put him on your shoulder and he will get to know you. Start slow with a gentle voice and go toward him with a bent pointer finger under his chest, this takes time though. Talk to them every day. Get close to the cage slowely and gently.and just talk. I have a male and he is loud. His name is sput. Good luck. Oh at night cover the cage with a simi dark sheet so YOU can sleep. If they are loud at night, which mine is, the sheet will help.

I have to agree with Sam the males are more colorfull and the females are duller an accurate way of sexing a bird would be a DNA test. If they are fighting I would have to say its because they are the same sex.

After 2 cocktails at a bar , its usually hard for me to tell if its a man or a woman too! But here is the trick: Check the adam's apple and the hands.
Happy hunting!

DNA test them. And get separate cages if they are fighting. Plus they will bond with you better if they are separated.
