I believe it is a self righteous spirit. We all, christian or not, can have a self righteous attitude and christians are as guilty as the rest of them, however, the apparent hatred they have also involves a spirit of rebellion. They know deep down that even if we don't have it perfectly right, that there is something to what we believe in and that ol' rebelliousness and self righteous spirit kicks in and causes them to act hateful. My personal opinion.

I'm not hateful towards most Christians. I'm hateful and angry towards the bigoted, hypocritical, weak-excuse for a human being Christians out there.
I'm all for freedom of religion, acceptance, tolerance, intelligent discussions, and debates. However, when you have SOME Christians (NOT ALL by FAR) either:
a) Blaming all other people for the violence in the world
b) Being racist or prejudice against other religions and non-religions just because they exist
c) Emailing me hate emails calling me a "dumb b****", my child is the anti-christ and going to hell, I'm a bad mother because I'm an Atheist, that I'm dumb, stupid,etc....
it really doesn't shed the best light on you all.
I know not to generalize though, which is why in all of my "angry and hateful" comments and questions, I am sure to point out SOME, A FEW, CERTAIN, and NOT ALL very clearly.
I apologize on behalf of the few of us that don't distinguish a difference and generalize.
Please don't generalize US as well....
EDIT: As for your "real question"....
I come here because I want to learn more about ALL religions so I can better understand what you believe, what other people believe, and what I believe. I can't be completely against religion and think there isn't a god if I know NOTHING of the religion. I can still not believe, but want to gain KNOWLEDGE through this section.
I also have to explain my choice as an Atheist in a real and serious way to people who ask questions. If I wasn't here to answer questions such as these, then people like you would never have the POSSIBILITY of learning something new and outside of your comfort zone.
Again, don't judge us from ONE person! You are being just as hypocritical by generalizing us as you say we are for being here.
I don't hate or dislike ANY religion...I am completely accepting of all religions...I just don't believe them. Period.
So, stop trying to heap us all into one "angry and hateful" pile of crap!

Not all Christians or even Christians in general hate atheists. Not all atheists are even atheists in general hate Christians or Muslims. It's a small, but very vocal minority on both sides that keeps things stirred up. I have several wonderful Christian friends who are fascinating people to talk to, and I have several Muslim and atheist and pagan friends who are fascinating to talk to. The thing they have in common is that they are good conversationalists, religion notwithstanding. What could explain the Christ-like behavior? Using the Bible or Holy Book in question as a magic 8-ball to justify a pre-existing hatred.

Maybe it's because we get tired of some Christians trying to push their religion on to us when it's clear we don't want to hear it. You have your beliefs leave me to mine! If you think we don't have a reason to be angry from time to time with some Christians. Maybe you should pay more attention to those Christians who tell my kids they are going to burn in hell cause their parents and their self's are not Christians. That would just be for starters. If you would open up those eyes of yours
sometimes maybe you just might understand!
"I know...Do You??" Very well said! I get several of those emails/messages from Christians all the time too!
Edit: For those of you who said it's cause we are scared or threatened. Please try educating your self before answering questions. You really must not know how lame those answers make you sound. We are NOT threatened nor afraid of your religion. We do know about your religion that is why we choose NOT to follow it.
Well it says "religion & spirituality" NOT for christians only! We have every right to be here it's a free country. Religion affects everyone daily one way or another. For example gay marraiges was outlawed in several states. All because Christians don't like it. Well if those gay people are NOT christians then they should not have to follow the rules of the bible. We pretty much stand up for what we believe in and our right to NOT have people like you push your religion onto us when it's unwanted! That and because people like you are always asking questions in wich you feel the need to direct towards us. Why do Christians go into other sections of Yahoo Answers and preach to people? Do you stay in only this section when you are giving a religious answer to any questions? I know alot of you don't, I see answers from Christians in all sections on here and they are preaching and insulting people because what their question is about is not something your "god" would approve of. So don't go stressing your self out over why we are here for.

I'm not an Atheist nor am I a Christian. I have friends who are both. I also have seen a lot of hate filled words back and forth between the two.
I will say in defense of Atheists..I always know where they stand, and they don't condemn me for my beliefs. They know when to take a position of defense against being judged and ridiculed, and understand that it is wrong to do so to another.

Atheists and Christians are naturally at odds. I've seen the anger and hate emanate from both groups. It appears most peeps on answers are looking for debate; some however are just looking for a fight.
Peace :)

Wow. Can you show an example of this? "Usually"? The vast majority on this board are nice. Sure there are a few that are trolls, like Julia, but there are christian and muslim trolls too. I seek out the reasonable christians and talk with them. I don't generalize and ask why christians are usually so hateful, however.

Because you believe they are doing evil and are going to burn in hellfire while being tortured by the devil maybe? I know I wouldn't like someone if they were always smiling in my face and acting nice, all the while thinking those kinds of thoughts about me and (85% of the time) talking crap behind my back.

The best defense is offense. I would imagine they get a lot of crap from us Christians or anyone who believes in God & want to give as good as they get.

Good question. Perhaps they feel threatened. Perhaps they had a bad religious experience, Perhaps, they are truly bigots.
I think it is hard to lump all atheists together. Some are probably very cordial to Christians. The ones that are not probably have a myriad of reasons
I do find it interesting that atheists and other secularists who claim christians are not "tolerant" , seem to not be "tolerant" of christians. A bit hyopcritical if you ask me
