Dogs are very social creatures, this is their nature. Be social with him, play with him. I highly recommend you find and watch the "Dog Whisperer" program on tv. At first I thought the guy was a freak, but he's actually very good with dogs and I have learned a lot from watching his programme.

The answers above are very good. I'd add a little subtlety that may or may not be in play in this situation, but it will eventually. Oftentimes, when a pet nudges you, he has picked up on YOUR emotional state and even thoughts. A close pet will draw near and do the very best that it can to communicate to you his encouragement and love and reassurances.

Your puppy has realized that you will pet him on his command. In general you should initiate the petting not have your puppy demand it. I know it is hard, because they are so darn cute.

When your puppy comes over to you demanding petting get up and leave the room for a couple of minutes. then come back in and ask him to sit then pet him. You have to be consistent in doing this. Eventually he will learn that you start the petting process. It puts you in charge of this relationship.

Good luck

He misses you, just pat him for a few minutes and when you've had enough get up and leave the room, he should get the picture to leave you alone. You shouldn't ignore him completely, he'll get lonely, maybe consider getting another dog to keep him company?
