Well clearly he knows your mom and like you said, he doesn't know you. If you see two people, one you know and one you don't, the usual thing to do is to talk to the person you know. I think it's really endearing that he talks to your mom, it'd make me like him more.

he feels less risk talking to her. If he talks to you he could say something dumb and never live it down. He's just a little shy. So corner him somewhere when you two are alone and make him talk.
