I would say there isnt a technique to guarantee a mystical experience if there is such a thing. William James wrote a very interesting book entitled "The Varieties of Religious Experience" and talks about mysticism quite a bit.

Define mystical and I'm sure you'll think of something but 'mystical' experiences apart from a relationship with the True and Loving God will lead to emptiness and confusion.

I use either pain or a combination of hyperthermia and exhaustion.

The first involves leather, my back, and a trusted friend. 'nough said.

The later is a 'ritual' I refer to as firedance. I build a fire chest high, leave on only a pair of shorts, and circle the fire, moving with the music, passing various body parts (arms, legs, occasionally I'll risk face) through the flames, with occasional full bodily leaps through the flames. Eventually, I fall out from the exhaustion and heat and 'go over there'.

I'm sure various people will claim these methods don't mesh up with their religion, but that's alright, 'cause I'm an atheist and just do it for the experience. It's just messing with your brain until it starts operating in a rather unusual way.

There is a book by Henry James called Varieties of religious experiences which is excellent. If you search for Jesus Christ you will certainly have religious/mystical experiences.

There is a spiritual realm and a physical releam. I am a born again Christian beleiver. I beleive that thost "mystical" experiences are from the demonic releam. Scripture say that they mascrade as angels of light.

A different route:

that opened up by the work of Dr Michael Persinger, with experiments on the effect of electromagnetic stimulation on the temporal lobes of the brain.

"Four out of five say that they've had experiences so profound they would be life-changing had they not understood the mechanistic underpinnings of what they had experienced."

Read Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself". There's a "mystical experience" if I ever saw one!

You are having one already, and if you cant see it,its cos youve got a made-up idea of what amystical experience is.
If you just want psychic adventure, take acid, but its not so good as the whole of ur life.
