It's called tinnitus.
I doesn't have to have to mean anything and some people live with it all their lives.
Personally, when my ears are ringing it means I'm stressed and either my blood pressure is rising or I'm gritting my teeth, which causes my jaw muscles to tighten.

This usually is the result of one of two things. Either you have some problem with the inner ear (cochlea or end organs of Golgi0) or, you have some cranial nerve involvement. The first cannot be reversed. The second usually responds to chiropractic care.

Tinnitus is usually expected with advancing age.

either you have an inner ear infection (in which case you would also have vertigo) or there is an injury to your eardrum. Both of these possibilities are self-limiting and benign.
