The heavens have always been defined as the galaxies and universes which in retrospect is in fact above us no matter what part of the world you live in. As for God's heaven it's been suggested that heaven is a dimension so to speak. A dimension that is right beside you, behind you, above you, under you. Read the Gospel of Judas. There's alot of pages missing but it's makes for interesting reading. Food for thought.

Because the Christians used to believe that the Earth was at the center of the Universe (which was of course a lot smaller then) and the World was flat and God lived in the sky, the Heavens. Strange that the Bible forgot to educate people on these things perhaps God wanted to keep us all ignorant till we invented telescopes, the Church certainly did.

Probably because Jesus ascended towards the Heavens in the book of Acts. He was taken "UP".....and the apostles continued gazing upwards as if expecting His return, until finally an angel said why stand ye gazing upwards.........

.21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length * is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed *, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
21:17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
Because the Temple of God is 1,500 miles high.

If heaven was up in the sky, I guess the astronauts managed to fly on top of heaven.. Wonder why they saw earth instead of heaven.

I believe both Heaven and Hell exist in a different time/space continuum. A place that we as mortal man will never discover with our intellectual minds. Perhaps not a physical place but only a spiritual one.

I don't know where heaven is, and I don't know if it really exists. But those are thoghts my brain processes,
My heart tells me heaven does exist and that's all I need,
As for where it is, they say home is where the heart is.
Heaven is where God is.

because, heaven was originally the term used for the univers, "outer-space" heaven is what held the stars and the planets. so likewise this heaven would be in the sky.
