I was diagnosed with Breast cancer 2 years ago....had a modified radical mastectomy on left breast, had 4 chemo treatments, hair fell out and everything. I'm ok now thank God! Now I'm on Temoxifen which is a sort of harmonal/chemo treatment so that the cancer won't come back to the other one. I think I have gained over 40 lbs since I started on this medication. I'm 47 years old going through menopause, maybe that's why I'm gaining. I am 5'4" and I weight about 180! I use to weigh about 140 before I was diagnosed! I would love to be 130 again! Is this weight ever coming off? Help?

Tamoxifen causes all kinds of side effects--weight gain, painful joints, etc., etc. I'm at the 4 year mark (had the same surgery you did), I quit the tamoxifen after 1 year--I'll take my chances with recurrence as opposed to feeling like crap!! Plus in the reasearch I did I found that Tamoxifen increases your chances of uterine and liver cancer. I could live to regret this in time (or not live to regret it) but I'm not taking that crap!!

Been and done the Tamoxifen thing, am a breast and ovarian cancer survivor. I gained weight at first, i started walking every day to help lose the weight. I am not a gym person, when it was cold i walked round the mall. Got me out and it's amazing how many people you meet walking, i have met some great friends i would never have come in contact with. I also had hot flashes, headaches with the drug, i soldiered through it and after about 6 months it eased off. I gained about 30 lbs overall, and yes it does come off! I have the sweetest tooth so i stocked up on veggies and fruit every time i got an urge to eat choccie i munched on the veggies. Not only did it help me lose the weight, but helped fight the cancer!

Tamoxifen is not easy, you have to weigh up the pro's and cons for and against it. I am in the high risk group, i chose to take it and have also used Heprecin (i hope i have spelt it right). In the end it's your body you know what is right for it, good luck!

I understand that weight gain is a common side effect of Tamoxifen. You can try diet and exercise to offset the results of the medication. But don't give up on the meds! Good luck!

Edema, or water retention(ie weight gain) is a side effect of Tamoxifen therapy, but it is much more common to menopause. Ask your Doctor to put you on a diuretic called furosemide. then watch the pounds come off. But stay close to a toilet.
