I've been dealing with some stress and a little anxiety recently and heard that yoga is a good way to relieve these issues. Is that true? Also, is yoga easy or pretty hard? I'm not very athletic!

Would you recommend learning yoga at home or at a gym?

Thanks!

Yoga is great exercise and an amazing stress release. It is very relaxing and really teaches you to focus on what you are doing, and your breathing, instead of the outside world.

The best way to start would be to find a gym or yoga studio with beginners classes. It is really important to have a good instructor when you first learn so that you don't hurt yourself, and so that you get the most out of the postures.

I was always shocked when I thought I was fully in a pose, and the instructor would walk over and adjust me an inch or two and it was a whole other feeling!!

The other thing about yoga is - don't rush it. You can do the same poses for a year and still get the benefit from doing it. Don't feel like you have to rush from beginner to intermediate in any timeframe. Once you learn poses in class, try doing just one or two of them at home every day, and you will feel much better.

Go to a yoga studio. Classes are usually cheap (7/hr) and they are taught by certified yoga instructors. Doing it at home might create injury since there is a lot more to yoga than copying the poses.

I started it and I had a lot of tight joints. Now, I am really flexable and have a large increase of muscle tone and flexability and I have only really done it for about six weeks. I love it. It helps with stress, concentration, and mood.

Learning yoga is easy as long as you listen to your body and compeat with yourself. So many people go "Oh wow, she is touching her toes, I should do that" and overexert themselves and it stops being fun. Just go at your own pace. A certified yoga instructor will help you with modifications. Trust me, you gain strength and flexability fast if you use modifications.

You will love yoga.

I took a pilates course, similar to yoga, and it was the best.
It's not really an athletic activity, and it's easy because you do what's comfortable for you; it's not competitive.
I would recommend a class; you're more likely to actually do it, and an instructor is available to guide you.
