Some have an honest interest. Others just enjoy ridiculing.

Just because I don't believe in something, doesn't mean I want to be ignorant of the belief. I would like to learn more about all religions, so I can better understand why people think and behave the way they do.

I'm not "bothered" by it, I'm just asking questions to gain knowledge.

I also like intelligent and well-thought out debates. I like to question things that are hard to explain, I like to pose ideas that get people thinking. I've been having an ongoing discussion with a believer of God over Christianity for about three weeks now. I rather enjoy our daily debates and talks.

It's just something I like to do.

Fair question, the reason I do it (frequently) is to try and find out what Christians, or Muslims or any other religious group actually know about their own religion, it fascinates me, I have asked enough questions and received enough answers now to know that the vast majority of all religions don't really understand what it is they are supposed to be believing in . It's a real eye opener, you ought to try it some time.
Just as an example ask a Christian where in any bible is the Holy Trinity mentioned, ask what it means. Simple enough question don't you think? No need to mock,(I really try not to ) but the answers you will get are just out of this world , it is very fascinating, or rather I used to find it so now I'm just a bit bored hearing the same old BS.It's just too easy.
BTW I have no objection about any one believing in God, my objection is with them thinking they have to follow a religion to believe, why?????

A lot of the questions seem along the lines of pointing out ludicrous and contradictory aspects of theism either to educate, enlighten or simply poke believers with a sharp stick. But many people are genuinely looking for answers to questions both obscure and mundane that they think Christians will be able to answer.

They are trying to do other people to think about the subject, but if you have strong beliefs, it shouldn't bother you. The main question here is that respect betwwen Atheists and Believers must exist.

I agree. Anyone who purports to be non-religious rant on and on and are trying to 'convert' as much as the next religion. If it really didnt matter they would be indifferent, wouldnt even bother to answer. Are there any true atheists out there who arent trying to talk you out of your faith? Any faith? I doubt it. If there are, then very few. The best answer they come up with is 'for knowledge or information'. Abit like Japan's answer to whaling, scientific research...my eye!

Many of us do so because we're concerned with what the religious right is doing to this country, and what Islam is doing in the Middle East. We view religion not only as a nuisance, but as a threat to civilization.

Basically, we want to get religious people to think critically about their beliefs. This is a good opportunity to reach those people.

Maybe some are truly interested in learning more about it. Some are just wanting to argue as well.

I would just pick the questions that you feel are sincere and ignore the rest.

ppl who ask a lot of questions but say they have no belief in christianity are curious to what makes ppl believe in it, trust it, devote their lives to it. Some of these ppl unconciously want to believe but find it difficult to do so. Other are just like whatever i dont buy that crock and pick arguments with ppl who do believe.

B/c they secretly are bothered by the subject and are trying to convince themselves otherwise by being rude. If they ridicule those that believe it boosts their self esteem for just a moment. Also, ppl tend to get really brave when they are on the internet b/c there is no fear of running into those, whom you have insulted later on!
