Shampoo is a hair care product used for the removal of oils, dirt, skin particles, environmental pollution and/or other contaminant particles that gradually build up in hair. The goal is to remove the unwanted build-up without stripping out so much as to make hair unmanageable.

Shampoo, when lathered with water, is a surfactant, which, while cleaning the hair and scalp, can remove the natural oils (sebum) which lubricate the hair shaft.

Shampooing is frequently followed by conditioners which increase the ease of combing and styling.

Hair conditioners are hair care products which are used to improve the texture and appearance of human hair.

Shampoo is shampoo is shampoo. Regardless of the brand you choose one thing is certain your hair will be cleaner after using it. According to a Consumer Reports study of 1,700 ponytails, there are some brands that produced slightly more effective results in select categories. The good news - none of the top picks were expensive salon brands.

*For Dry and Damaged Hair*
One of the most common trends in marketing shampoo products for brittle damaged hair is to sell the concept of "moisturizing" the hair. Shampoo alone usually will not accomplish this. What does help this type of hair condition is a process of coating the hair to help soften the outer cuticle and additional emollients to soften the hair. This type of corrective action is generally found in hair conditioners and not shampoo.

However, there were some shampoos that tested more effective then others.

- Finesse Plus Moisturizing Shampoo Plus Conditioner (for dry or coarse hair)
- Thermasilk Heat Activated Regular (for normal hair)
- Head and Shoulders (dandruff for normal hair)

*For Color-Treated Hair*
The challenge of protecting and prolonging color-treated hair is an ongoing pursuit. Regardless of which products we find within 3 - 4 weeks the roots begin to show and the hair begins to turn colors. Hair products boast about their ability to protect the hair through gentle cleaning and sealing in color. During a test by Consumer Reports it was determined that it is ultraviolet light that produces the most damage and shampoos and conditioners had very little effect on protecting or prolonging the color. The bottom-line on this is the best way to protect your color-treated hair is to cover it.

- L'Oreal ColorVIVE Gentle (for color-treated or highlighted hair)

*Fine or Limp Hair*
For those who are frustrated by the experience of leaving their house in the morning with full lustrous hair and arriving to work with limp strands there is some good news. It was determined by Consumer Reports that shampoos can assist with this problem with a process of coating the shaft with polymer and reducing oils from the hair. The bottom-line on various products designed specifically to "volumize" limp hair? It was determined that shampoo designed for "normal" hair had equal performance results.

- Pantene Pro-V Ultra V Shampoo Plus Conditioner(for normal hair)

For truly damaged hair, the best shampoos I've found are L'Oreal Series Expert, which are ONLY available from salons. Anything from a drug/grocery store is so filled with waxes and alkaline chemicals, you'll only be doing more damage.

Think about it this way... if you dip a piece of string into wax, it becomes coated and smooth feeling. If you keep dipping, it builds up, right? Then if you take that string and whack it against a countertop, it SHATTERS, which is what happens if you use shampoos like Pantene! They're nothing but wax! On the other hand, shampoos like Herbal Essences are closer in chemical composition to DISHWASHING DETERGENT than they are to a shampoo that will help your hair!! TRUST ME!! I'm a cosmetologist with a degree in cosmetic chemistry, as well!

Oddly sufficient, the inspiration of "shampoo" has no longer something on to do with hair (and does no longer, puns aside, contain our present day note "sham," meaning "phony"). "Shampoo" comes from the Hindi note "campo," meaning "to press," and a "shampoo," which entered English round 1762, change into initially an total-body rubdown. truly, until eventually the mid-19th century, inquiring for a "shampoo" might want to get you pummeled through a masseur (or masseuse) and slathered with oils and creams. in straight forward words ultimately (in case you lasted that lengthy) might want to your hair be washed. through about 1860, despite the indisputable fact that, "shampoo" had attained its unique present day that technique of "washing the hair." almost immediately thereafter, "shampoo" began for use as a noun meaning both an act of shampooing or the particular cleansing soap used on the hair.
