When I was a kid, our cows would come in with dry cracked nipples and also scratched from briars and such. There was NO way to milk them, my hand, like that. We would take warm water and wash them and that would help to soften the nipples so we could milk them.

I don't remember if we put anything on them after that, unless it was LARD or perhaps Jergen's lotion. There wasn't a lot of "things" to use back then. Good luck. Pops
