I am a college student in NC. My parents live 9 hrs away, also in the state. My car is registered to my mother for insurance purposes. My inspection sticker has expired. When I realized it expired I went to the Ford place to get it inspected. They told me that because the county my parents live in have different inspection laws (admissions) I cannot get my car inspected here. I don't know what to do, obviously driving nine hours with an expired inspection sticker in the middle of exams is out of the question. Also, my tag expires next month. I tried to get that renewed as well, and was told my mother would have to do it. She said she would, but no tag has arrived yet. Is there anyway to get temporary tags/stickers while I wait? My car is in fairly good shape, and while not driving was possible in october, it is no longer an option if I plan to continue in school. I know there are students who live farther from home than I do, how do they deal with such things?

since you are out of state, you are allowed to return home to have your car inspected. Happens to milatary people too.
If you get pulled over enroute to home explain to the officer that your returning home from college to get your car inspected and all. at the most you'll get a warning that it needs to be done ASAP.

Hey, this is life. I have been caught there several times in my life. I had an inspection sticker out one November (right before Thanksgiving holiday). It was a 3 hour drive home, but I went ahead and took the chance and made it fine. I took care of the sticker and have as yet to not plan far enough ahead to get the sticker ahead of time. I am with you, I think the inspection laws have some flaws - they should allow you to get an exception for cases like this. I guess you are stuck with the chore of driving to your home county before you can get it inspected. Good luck.

There is no such thing as a temporary plate. Some states will issue a temporary permit to move a vehicle over a day or two. I have no idea how those who live further away deal with such things, ask them, not me. You do have access to a phone don't you? Call the main office of the DMV for your state, and/or the office in the county you are registered in and ask them what you can do under these circumstances.

You might want to call them back and ask if there is any way that you can renew tags/get inspections for vehicles that aren't yours if you have power of attorney to sign for your mom.

Many states allow this, some if the power of attorney statement has been notarized, other states you don't even need notarization.

Most dmvs have power of attorney forms that your mom can fill out and sign, giving you power of attorney for that car only. (you don't have to go to a lawyer, and she isn't signing her life over to you...it is just for one car one time.)

In KS...these forms can be found online on the state website. I don't know how easy they are to find in your state.

Otherwise, the only thing that can be done is that your parent will have to get the inspection in their county and renew the tags.

The car must be inspected in your parents county. No way around that. Most students probably plan ahead to make sure their stickers are renewed before exams.

Go to the DMV and ask for a temporary.
