Water flushes out your system. Diet soda introduces toxins to your body (that sugar substitute is a chemical that feigns sweet -- it's not good for you).
In moderation, diet soda is a good substitute for regular soda.
And as a guideline, drink 1/2 ounce of water per pound you weight and that will flush your system and hydrate you.

WATER!
Diet soda contains "fake" sugars that have been proven to cause cancer in mice. It also doesn't help hydrate you b/c of the sodium content.
Definitely stick with water. If you're looking for the caffeine, try coffee, since it's naturally derived.
