i have a question and it says:
Explain clearly as you can why the boys consulted their silver watches. i have to get the answer from the passage, this is the passage:

From time to time, with a show of mock solemnity the boys consulted their silver watches-not to tell the hour but to see whose watch was beating faster. On Saturday nights theook turns to have a hip-bath on front of the fire; and they lived with the memory of their mother.

i am not sure if this is enough information for you but i can tell you that the boys were brothers and they were kind. their mother had died a long time ago and they always quarelled.

thanks very much if you can help.

There are two metaphors I came up with, the first one being that the boys are checking their watches to find out who's is the best, the second one is that the watches signify how much time they have left in their lives, since their mother just died, and who ever's beats the fastest has the least amount of time left.

Homework is a pain in the ***, but it's worth it and the consequences of not doing it are low grades, low self esteem, hating school, angry parents, and awkwardness around teachers. The best thing to do is just DO the homework. Don't try to think, "I shouldn't..." or doubt yourself - just do it! You have to be smart about it, do the homework that is most important first, leave the little things for last, take frequent breaks, no eating while working as it's distracting, NO TV until you are COMPLETELY done.

They're competing with each other. If the boys are constantly quarelling, it's safe to assume that they are competitive. Whoever has the fastest beating watch has acheived no great accomplishment, so clearly the boys compare watches for the sake of competing.

i think from my point of view by reading the passage that they consulted their watches so as to c whose was faster and from the inner meaning as we are provided that they remembered their mom as they lived with it, this shos that they wanted to c from their watches whose love was most and tender to their mom! i only tried sorry if its not rite coz m a student too! is it on literature? if u need help just ask!
