Lately, my 5-year old child has been waking up between 10pm-11pm. When my child wakes up, he is not there--what I mean by that is he's up, eyes open, and can walk around, but his mind is still asleep. You can't carry on a conversation with him, you can ask him to do things, but he is very slow and sluggish to respond.

Some of the things he's done:
- We'll find him standing around in a room, just staring at the wall.
- We've found him standing in the closet of my other child's room. (three doors between his door and their closet!)
- He'll wake up crying and tossing and turning in bed. He needs to go to the bathroom if that is the case, but we have to tell him everything he needs to do to do that. (flush, wash, pull up your pants, etc.)
- We found him up brushing his teeth after he had been in bed for 3 hours. (He had already brushed his teeth that night)

In the morning, when we ask him about what happened last night, he has no memory about it. This is stressful! Help!

My 5 year old son is exactly like that. I have found that he has a mild case of sleep walking. My son doesn't get out of bed though like yours.

Has your son started school?

My son got worse when he started school. When he gets plenty of rest the night before he doesn't do this. Their bodies will react to stress in this way also.

Your son might also be having dreams while he sleep walks. When your son does this again, the next morning as soon as he wakes up, ask him if he was having a dream last night and what it was about?

You may want to talk with his doctor to see if the problem is serious, or will get more serious. Sleep Walking can become deadly if he leaves the house or if you have steps in your house.

I know all to well how scared it makes you when he does this. It's like they need to be rushed to the doctor, because you can't get a response from him that you can understand.

Good Luck, and I hope that you find a solution.

This happened to us ALL the time with my son! He is 17 years old now, and we laugh about it all the time.

We lived in Minnesota and would wake up in the middle of the winter at 3:00 am to find the door wide open and he would be sitting in the car!

He would also start running in circles crying--we couldn't get him to tell us what was wrong.

We finally figured out that he was only waking up part way--we would help him go to the bathroom and get him back into bed. He would never remember a thing about it in the morning.

Don't forget to warn the babysitters! We freaked a couple out because we forgot to tell them it might happen.

He grew out of it before he was 9, maybe even earlier. It was crazy!

He's not really awake. He's still asleep. This isn't uncommon. It's called "sleepwalking." Wikipedia has plenty of information about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleepwalking

There's a myth that says you should never wake a sleepwalker or something will happen to them. In actuality, the only real danger of waking a sleepwalker up is that they may be frightened into aggression. That is, if you must awaken a sleepwalker, do it from far away. =)

my 5 year old has been doing the same thing...maybe it's a stage. Mine usually needs to go to the restroom when he's wandering. He tends to go to wherever the most light is to go, so we make sure we turn off all the lights except the bathroom light. He usually just goes, then heads back to bed. Sometimes though, he'll just stand there sceaming and crying. I hope you find an answer, so it can help me too.

My son does this too. Once he came out and gave me a hug. The next morning I asked him about it and he said he never did that. I don't think there's a problem really provided he's not doing anything dangerous. My oldest boy climbed out the window a couple times and wound up on the neighbor's doorstep. That was a problem we had to put locks on his windows. If you are really worried see your doctor about it. They'll probably say it's nothing to worry about.

He is sleep walking. I would discuss this with his pediatrician. Is he in school? If so, something may have happened at school that is causing him to do this, if this is something he does not normally do. Good Luck.
