my mom said I could have the entire basement to myself if I cleaned it up. I hate cleaning, and I'm horrible at it. I try all the time but once I get down there I get so overwhelmed I cant even look at it. I guess what I really want is a magic wand that would just zap everything away :] but since that is quite unlikely to happen I thought Id ask everyone on here how to tackle my monstrous basement and see if anything could get me working.

The basement seems to be a catch all for the entire house. i would suggest that since it is up to you to clean, if you haven't seen anyone use it in the last 12 months.... THROW it away.
This of course is with you telling your mom your intentions. Too many times people save things more for sentiment, then practical reasons. For those things that you know will be used in the future, tell your mom to buy pegboard and hooks find a place and hang up what can be and box up the rest. Honestly, it sounds like something I told my son to do when I knew I should have done it myself

Sweetie, anyone can eat an elephant, one bite at a time. Pick an area and work on it. You'll find it handy to organize things into piles of similar items. Once all the things are piled, deal with the piles: trash, keep, store....You'll do fine. The hardest part is starting. And remember the WHOLE basement will be your perfect space. Bet it will be gorgeous when you get through!

put on some good music and tackle small areas at a time. I dont know whats in your basement, but make a pile of things to be thrown away, things to donate, clothes, etc. get a couple friends together and tell them you'll buy some pizza or something if they help you for an hour or two. see if you can at least put a dent in it so you feel like youve accomplished something.

Have a storage area.Get boxes,,one box is save,,one is donate,,one is trash,,one is move to another area of the house.Vaccuum everywhere,,then mop everywhere with bleach water.Once you get busy,,it will be easier than you think.Just pick up the item & say,,where does it go?
