My Mom had that problem and she put aluminum foil across the couch. It scares them and keeps them off of the couch.

What a sneaky pup!!!
I'm guessing from your post, that the dog is NOT allowed on the furniture when you are home. If that's the case, I think your best plan of action here, is to cover the couch with something when you are gone. A plastic table cloth would make the couch a much less desireable place to lounge as it's not very comfy and will make lots of crinkly noise when he gets on it. It may help break the dog's habit, but at the very least, it will protect the couch from hair etc.
Good Luck!

When you leave, put an old blanket or sheet or couch cover over the couch to protect it. That way you don't have to crate the dog since it seems the dog's behavior is otherwise good and the dog only gets on the couch while you are away.

The problem is that you are not their to punish him for his mistake. On television I have seen a solution for this. Perhaps it is a bit unpractical, but it tends to work.
(1) Place a camera in your room focussing on your couch. (2) Put your stereoset on full volume and switch it off and take the remote control with you. (3) get out of house and follow your dogs movements at your neighbours house.
When he jumps on the couch, you use your remote to switch on the stereoset (which is than at full loudness). The dog will be scared and jumps off your couch. Repeat this a couple of times, and your dog will learn the conscequence of jumping on your couch.
Why does it work? Dogs are smart, but can think about it that you did this with your remote. So they scare at the moment they do something. The dog thinks then that his action, results in the loud stereo sound.
Good luck!

You do know don't you, that the dog is training you to clean up after him? Have you considered taking the couch with you? Just kidding, of course. I finally had to put books, a chair ,all sorts of stuff on my couch to keep my dog off of it. Finally, I just gave him a special place, that was comfortable and he could see out a window and, I think, most important, his own spot smelled like me. You might have to resort to crating him while you are away, or keeping him shut out of that area of the house.

You can either buy or make a Scat Mat..Pet supplies have them or eBay, or Dr's foster and Smith online. However, you can pick up the carpet walk-way runner of plastic at any carpet store..It is clear plastic, used to protect heavy traffic area..the bottom side is very stickery, as it keeps it from slipping..So, you cut a piece to put on your couch, but lay it on the couch upside down..dogs sure don't like to step on the plastic 'stickers', and will quickly learn to stay off..You can also put these in any doorways, or anywhere you don't want the dog to go..As they are so lightweight, you can pick them up when not needed..

Drs Foster & Smith website offers what used to be called "scat mats" that are electic mats that you put on your counter or sofa that when the animal touches them they receive a slight shock simular to a static shock. After a few of these shocks the animal quits jumping on the mats and your sofa. There are also babygates that can keep your dog out of your living room. Other stuff doesn't really work such as sprays and such.
Good luck!

Get your dog his own dog bed (a few them, why not), spray some bitter-apple spray on the couch, and brush your dog regularly to keep the fur down.
