Why are so many people scared of God? Why do we think that he is just a big cosmic judge in the sky ready to strike us down when we sin? Doesnt it say that Jesus (God) WEPT in compassion for the human race? Didnt he DIE so that we dont have to fear judgment?

Yes it says to fear God. Fear is respect hon... doesnt mean to run away because you're afraid of judgement. How are we going to get close to someone that we think is going to hurt us?

Wise men fear God. I'm not scared of God, yet I have a healthy fear of Him. I love Him. I worship Him and adore Him. He is the lover of my soul and even though I feel very close to Him I can respect that He holds the universe in His hands. What a powerful and awesome God. Why shouldn't I fear Him?

People do not understand the difference between fearing the Lord and being scared of Him. Yes many were scared in fear of God in the Old Testament- But it is a reverant fear we are to have for the Lord. We are under His grace right now- He is merciful. He will judge someday and His wrath will come- but He loves those who follow Him- He loves those who have put their trust in Him. Why do you think He died on the cross? He did that out of GREAT LOVE! A mean God would not do that- A mean God would send everyone to Hell. But God is perfect and His ways are just. He is a good God and His love is enduring- He is a God to be feared- but it is a holy and righteous fear. I stand in Awe of My Lord and Savior!

Revelation 15:4
Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed."

People fear God out of respect. It's a love and honor that we feel for those that truly love the Lord. Fear isn't the fear like being scared.

People fear the wrath of God. Plain and simple. Some people misinterpret what that means exactly. God loves us as His children. That means He loves us enough to correct us when we are wrong. Jesus died to save those of us who ask for salvation. We will still be judged, but not on whether or not we go to Heaven, but what, if any, Heavenly rewards will be given us. At least, that's the way I understand it. Good Luck!!!!

Every sin has its consequences. Salvation is not a license to sin, but a turning away from sin. Jesus died to free us from the wages of sin, which is eternal death, and so that we could have perfect fellowship with God. The Christian is saved unto eternal life, but he/she must still act responsibly. God hates sin, and the Christian that sins is not blessed by God. Sin retards spiritual growth, and this is the real penalty of committing a sin. Without spiritual growth salvation means very little.

Because of all the weird stuff we see in religious books that make god into a projection of our ego thought systems -- a god that makes hell, sin, guilt, punishment all real. The rest of us are scared because we know that this ego-projection isn't real and we wonder if there is anything that is real. The only way to resolve all of this is to let all the concepts drop -- let all belief go away -- and experience god directly.

If a person has accepted the lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior, and adhere to his laws, then one has nothing to fear. From a biblical standpoint, only the lost need to worry about God's wrath and judgment.Revelations says that the lost will mourn when they see Jesus coming down from the sky one day.

If you do not keep/do the commandments of God or Jesus, then you have every right and every need to be frightened, and scared out of your wits, because of what is soon to come upon the wicked., and I do not mean just the Judgment.

The idea of an angry and vindictive God helps those in power to control people.

"do this or you will be punished, not by us but by an all-powerful entity in the skies" was the way monarchies and feudal lords from the Middle Ages sustained power.
