its very difficult to make a wake warm and inviting, as events surrounding them are always sad. i would suggest music, something quiet, but not somber, and perhaps have someone with a video camera could walk around and have everyone there tell theyre happiest memory of your grandmother. my digital camera can make movies with sound, and i can have those movies burned to a disk in only a few minutes. then you could play that video at the end of the wake, and have disks made and sent to family and friends. another idea is to cut white fabric into 6 inch squares and have each guest at the wake decorate the fabric with fabric markers, paint, etc. those squares could then be made into a quilt for the family. im sorry for your loss. god bless you, your family, and your grandmother. :)

Ask the entreprenore to let you go in about 1 to 1.5 before openning to all and this way you would have personal time alone with her and with the family only.
You can also add some pictures on a table of her and her hobby stuff all exposed close to your grandmother. I saw that before and people just talk more about her and explane some anecdone to the family. It is very good souvenir and memory to keep.
The seremony can be done very personal with some close people and family member to go infront and talk about your grandma and share some good moments.

After the funeral you can invite friends and family for a lunch and exchange and that help to close the lost.

Take care

One thing we did at the last family wake we had was have a big picture frame (the kind with spaces for with lots of photos) with photos from all the periods of the deceased's life - his military picture, wedding pictures, more recent pictures from vacations, and so on. There was also a decorated bulletin board if people wanted to bring their own pictures and have us tack them up temporarily. People seemed to like this.

create a picture board with joyful pictures of your grandmother with other people. Pictures of her vacations and visits to family members. Choose vibrant flower arrangements. talk about all the good times and funny stories you can remember. You need to know in your heart that she would want that from you.

My dad passed away this year, and we did a slide presentation from when he was in the service, while we were growing up, with the grandchildren and friends he's had during the years. (He was 91 when he died.) My friends who attended and didn't know him said how nice it was, because they went away with a feeling of what kind of guy he was. During the slide show, we played music like he would like. It was very nice.

lots of flowers, friends, family, and laughter. when my grandfather died my grandmother was in awful shape. it really helped to see so many people there and hearing all the laughter was soothing. it's hard no matter what, and i'm sorry for your loss.
