While digging through the web (and not finding anything) it occurred to me that the basic life saver is probably made like a lollipop. And you can make lollipops at home. This time of year just about any department store should have some decent candy making supplies in stock.

LifeSavers milestones:

1912. Pep-O-Mint LifeSavers introduced in the summer, just as ships started to use round life-saving rings. The new candy was an alternative to chocolate candies that melted in hot weather.
1913. Inventor Clarence Crane sold the rights to Edward Noble for slightly less than $3,000.
1924. The first fruit-flavored candy was produced as a solid boiled fruit drop.
1929. Technology developed to put the hole in the center of the candy. All LifeSavers since have had the hole.
1935. Cherry and pineapple flavors joined lemon, lime and orange to complete the current five-flavor roll.
Today: About 100 rolls are produced every minute, and 125 million LifeSavers candies are consumed daily.

Here is how to read the freshness code on a pack of lifesavers (like they stay around long enough to get stale).
The date code on Lifesavers follows a day/month/year format.

Example: 06APR 2006 Expires April 6, 2006

The sparkling comes about because of a combination of mint flavoring and crystalline sugar. When you crack the crystal, the energy then stimulates a component in the flavoring to emit a light. The component in wintergreen is methyl salicylate.

whilst i replaced into little my brother instructed me they are noted as lifesavers because of the fact in case you by probability inhale one you will no longer choke because of the fact there's a hollow interior the middle to enable the air via. So according to probability they have. :) EDIT: Jack available beat me to it. yet that's no longer the real reason they are noted as Lifesavers. they are noted as that because of the fact they resemble the existence saver floatation contraptions on boats and such.
