whoa thats a tough one. tell her you found a position that will advance your skills and experience and be challenging and rewarding work. surely, she should be happy for you. ask your hubby for advice. he probably knows her well and can help you soften the blow when you tell her. you could also consult her first, and seek advice from her (use reverse psychology) so she thinks she suggested you take the job. eheh. Good Luck.

Tough situation! Why do you want to quit? If you want to quit just b/c you want more professional growth, just tell her! I know it's hard but say to her..."I love working here but I've always wanted to do 'xyz' and now have the perfect opportunity at ACME corp. I don't want to leave you in a lurch, so I can stay up to 6 weeks until you find someone new. I can also help train them. Even when I'm gone, you can call me if you have any questions about my old job."

Best thing is to give her a heads up you are looking so she won't be shocked or feel cheated when you present another offer to her.

If she's just plain mean or you hate your co-workers, still... be cordial and nice.

Very delicately I would think...my suggestion, find another job that is at or above the pay level and responsibilities you now have so that it can be seen when you do give your notice that you are doing something to benefit your family. Discuss the issue with your spouse definitely, sometimes they can speak up where we can't. Prayers and Merry Christmas =)

If you have found another job just tell her that you have enjoyed working for her but have taken an opportunity to grow in your career. If you just don't like working with her make up something to the same effect about growing in your career to save face.

Same as you'd quit any other job. Tell her you are moving on to other opportunities.

Find another Job and tell her that you receive a better offer with more money, if kids are involved, play the kids card and tell her that you need more stability for your children, her grandkids.
good luck

Say "I quit". Your Mother-In-Law cannot do anything about it.

Emily - this one is so so so simple I can't believe you did not think of this. Make the hubby tell her after all it is his momma we are talking about here. He must say he is "making" you quit so she can get mad at him and not you.
