Anything that becomes of higher importance to us than God becomes a "god before him". It may not be an actual deity, it may be a TV show or a country or a hobby, or a sin. It goes hand in hand with the scripture about being unable to have two masters and another one which doesn't seem to come to mind right now...... Nations are temporal, no matter how much you love them they will fall. Babylon fell, Greece fell, Rome fell, and so on. We should care very little about how great or glorious the nation is and instead concentrate on our own lives and relationships.

the answer is clearly , "Yes."
Stephen Decatur, though seemingly striking the correct tone for a military man's obedience to civlian control, nevertheless erred in equating the policies and decisions of the United State's temporary political leadership to "My Country."
It's a violation of the ethical foundations of our civilization to place allegiance to political leadership or religious dogma ahead of our ethical responsibilities, which Buddha summed passively as "Do not do to others that which you find odiious when done to you" and which Jesus summed actively as "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." This is the commandment which sums all others.
The fact that a political or military leader orders you to commit what is clearly unethical, such as murdering or torturing captives, has never been and will never be an acceptable defense for an individual lapse in ethics. We hung Nazis who made that defense.
Certainly, when you give allegiance to your country in both it's good and evil acts, from a Judeo-Christian point of view, you have set the temporary interests of your national leadership ahead of what is supposedly God's eternal and unwavering command.

There are Two commandments binding on those of The True Christian Faith... and that sentiment could violate the second. "...to love thy neighbor as thyself"... if improperly applied... and definatly would violate the first if ones love of country superceeds love for God and his word and will. " love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and all thy soul, and all thy mind, and all thy strength.

Yes. Nothing gets unqualified worship except the Creator. Not a nation, not a King, not a sports team.
